Steve Carell as GruDuring the Universal Pictures press junket for Despicable Me 2 at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, Steve Carrell, discussed his role as the former arch-villain, Gru and how surreal his career has been.

If you had your own minions what would you have them do for you: Car wash. I figure they were like sponges, just spin them around, drive your car through, wash wax and polish your car. I can’t imagine anyone could do it better than the minions.

What moments did your wife and kids notice your expressions in Gru: They notice it, I don’t. That’s the weird part, because you don’t see yourself in the mirror all day, but your wife and your kids do. As you’re recording, they have a camera in the room and as you’re doing all the voice, the animators will watch that tape for reference. Not that they are modeling the character completely after you but they do use expressions and from time-to-time, and I couldn’t tell you where, my wife will nudge me and go, “That’s you, that’s it. That’s exactly what you do.”

About returning for the series finale of “The Office”: I lied to everyone. I didn’t want it to be a big thing. I did it out of respect for the actors. How early did we know? Several months. I talked to Greg Daniels (writer of The Office) and my only hope with it was that I didn’t want it to be about Michael coming back, but I wanted it to be a tip of the hat to the show.

About the edible sombrero hat: I’ve never seen that in real life, but you know that someone in Cancun this summer, people will be walking around with taco hats on, for sure. I loved how subtly they did it too. People just walking by taking chips off the hat. The writers and animators are really smart. I’ve now seen the movie twice. There are things I didn’t notice the first time that, it’s really layered. There is a lot of stuff going on. After awhile, it could get pretty ugly though. If you’re not having equal amounts of guacamole and chip, you’re going to have a problem.

How did you feel about the backstory about Gru being rejected as a youngster: Completely related. Honestly, I did relate to that. I think most people do, and not just in girls, or boys or dating. I think the most self-confident people felt like an outsider, felt like they weren’t being seen or heard in someway. I think that’s a really relatable scene.  That can go either way too. You can have that one time where the girl says, “Hey, you’re all right.” But that one time you get shot down, it stays with you. I was personally shy a long, long time with girls.

Discussing how surreal his career has been: This is still surreal, I’m doing a press conference for an animated in that I’m going to be in? Wow, how did that happen? I mean, who cares what I have to say? I really…yeah. I don’t think it will ever feel second nature. I don’t think it feels deserved. I don’t think it will ever bell, “Well of course, this is the culmination of my career and where it was headed,” I have never felt that way. It is a continual surprise.

Despicable Me 2 opens July 3rd nationwide.
