Most comic fans are familiar with The Sandman, Neil Gaiman’s mature readers epic about Morpheus and his Endless family. It is an important piece of literature for sure, but Gaiman has written so much more for DC Comics, and they are finally collecting many of those stories in one volume with the DC Universe by Neil Gaiman hardcover.
Much like the previous collection, DC Universe by Alan Moore, this collects stories from varied sources featuring many of DC’s greatest characters. Featuring stories from BATMAN #686, DETECTIVE COMICS #853, GREEN LANTERN/SUPERMAN: LEGEND OF THE GREEN FLAME, plus stories from SECRET ORIGINS, BATMAN: BLACK AND WHITE, and WEDNESDAY COMICS with fan-favorite collaborators Andy Kubert, Mark Buckingham, Mike Allred, and more. These stories feature Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and more of DC’s heavy hitters and more obscure characters, written as only Gaiman can.
Much of Gaiman’s DC output is already available in collected form, but this hardcover collects his short stories and one-shots for the first time in one place. If it is anything like the Moore volume, it will be sitting on my bookshelf as soon as it hits stores. Neil Gaiman may not be a prolific writer of comics, but what he has written is always great and worth re-reading, so this collection is a must have for comic fans. It is available for pre-order right now, and has a release date of July 26th, 2016.
