Celebrating its 10th anniversary Daybreakers is making its way to a 4K upgrade on September 10, 2019. I never saw the film upon its release a decade ago, but with its home entertainment release, I thought I would give it a shot. The story takes place in 2019 where a plague has turned virtually everyone into a vampire and the unfortunate unlucky ones who stayed human, well…yeah, it’s not good for them.
Enter scientist, Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) who is trying to figure out an alternative to farming humans or a blood substitute for the vampire population. Teamed with Charles Bromley (Sam Neill) and Lionel Cromac (Willem Defoe), a discovery is made that could save the human race and the vampire population.
This is an old story about how to save a population on the verge of extinction and with the recent fires in the Amazon, we are even more away of humanity racing to its own doom if greed surpasses community. However, this film wasn’t as scary as I had anticipated and I am a huge wuss when it comes to horror flicks, but the blend of horror and science-fiction, with a dash of hope for survival made it an interesting film and I now wished I watched it in theaters.
One of the most memborable likes is Defoe’s character, Lionel stating, “Living in a world where vampires are the dominant species is about as safe as bare backing a 5 dollar whore,” when asked by Edward if the place was safe. Probably not a line you could get away with today in a world filled with outrage culture, but definitely an honest statement when the dominate species is only driven by their immediate hunger.
What was totally surprising was the minimal bonus features coming along with the 4K, they are what I usually watch first, long before I ever get to the film. I expected a lot more from the anniversary edition, but I can’t complain because they were still entertaining.
