Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir Lights up Dark Horse

GameStop, Inc.

In 1999 I watched the lightsaber fight in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace with my jaw on the floor; what was going to happen? I figured Qui Gon was a goner, and we knew Obi-Wan would live to be in his 70’s before abruptly committing suicide…but what of Darth Maul? Would he be the prequel trilogy bad guy? Would he have his presence loom over the heroes like Darth Vader did in the original trilogy? Would he have any incredible connections to any of the characters that’d be revealed in an absolutely classic and iconic way? Could he be Obi-Wan’s father? Maybe horns skip a generation.

Nope, he was sliced in half. Darth Maul, we hardly knew ye. I remember walking out thinking “Well, that’s that I guess.” But then something from just a few years ago struck a chord with me; in Star Wars Dark Forces II: Jedi Knights there was this Dark Jedi called Maw who was sliced in half in a very similar way as Darth Maul, and he survived due to his anger and rage and became a floating half body of awesome you had to fight as a boss. Maw was merely a Dark Jedi, and Maul was a Sith Lord, so if Maw found a way to survive why couldn’t Darth Maul?

My friends scoffed at me and told me I was crazy. I told them “Just you wait, Darth Maul will be back to lead the clones in the Clone Wars!” and then they announced Christopher Lee as Count Dooku, the new Sith Lord. I tried showing them that one comic book from awhile back where Darth Maul inexplicably shows up with robot legs to fight an older Obi-Wan Kenobi, but they didn’t consider it canon.

But I WAS RIGHT! I WAS SO RIGHT! HAHAHA! IN YOUR FACE, NAYSAYERS! In 2012 Darth Maul made his return in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, which IS considered part of the canon. I’m only going to say this one more time, but I was TOTALLY RIGHT! Anyway, enough of the gloating; Darth Maul appeared, did some stuff, and then The Clone Wars was cancelled without any sort of wrap-up with the character.

People were understandably upset; why bring back Darth Maul only to let his fate slip into the unknown after a cancellation? Couldn’t they produce an animated movie or something? No? A comic book? Awesome, I’ll take that. Star Wars Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir picks up where his Clone Wars story left off, he’s a prisoner to his former master, Darth Sidious, who reveals to him that he’s being kept alive because, well…reasons? I’m only two issues in and I can already see where this is going; Darth Maul makes a grand escape and it’ll be revealed that Sidious actually let him escape in order to use him. This is kind of a Star Wars trope, you know? The ‘easy escape’ dates back all the way to the first Star Wars back in 1977. I hope this isn’t the case and I’m just being paranoid, but I’m having serious doubts.

It’s a book that wraps up a dangling storyline from a cartoon that was cancelled far too soon, so if you want to know what happens to Darth Maul, I suggest the heck out of this book. If you didn’t catch up with Star Wars: The Clone Wars you’ll just be lost and confused. The book has a prison escape, some epic battles, but it seems extremely short and that’s a big problem for me. It is neat to see Darth Maul go from the shadowy assassin to full-blown leader of an army, but they don’t play with it enough to make it interesting. Darth Maul fighting bad guys is cool in small doses, but he needs to direct his anger and rage towards the Jedi. Why couldn’t they make him claim the title of Sith Master and take on an apprentice so he can dispose of Sidious and Dooku as imposters to the rights of the Sith and then destroy the Jedi as originally intended? Instead, Darth Maul is kind of aimless here, at least in my opinion. Don’t worry readers; issue #2 is a bit more interesting.
