Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus #2  is an unrelenting story written by George Mann.  First he put our heros in the Crystalline Labyrinth fighting all kinds of baddies. Now we find poor Fira and Aldrich, in the even worse Weeping Forest. Why is it worse? Well if you like spiders then this will be your little slice of paradise.

Fira’s memory is waning by the hour and Aldrich is her only friend to lead her on their quest. Fira is the strong knight with an even stronger will. She might have forgotten her past, but she hasn’t forgotten how to fight.

This is one of the most brutal comics that I’ve read in awhile. I’m starting to think that George Mann is a bit of a sadist at this point. The things that he puts Fira and especially Aldrich in, is just plain cruel. Honestly, on a serious note, I love how this comic pans out. I dig it when our hero’s are met with challenges, whether its for atonement, love, or pure adventure. Hercules and his 12 trials has been told now for centuries, due to these challenges put before him. Or if you want a more current example, Bruce Lee in The Game of Death, where he fights different guardians on different floors. Put the protagonist in through some tribulations and it’ll with the reader. Everyone of us has our trials, they might not be a dragon, lion, or some evil specter. Rather its custody, job loss, or even just the flu. But comics have our real world problems magnified by a hundred. Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus #2, while being totally fantastic is based on the fact that things get worse. Entropy is a undeniable fact of life.

Fira is our portal to this adventure. We know just as much as she does. When she’s confused so are we. It’s not jolting though, I like having a guide in a story. Our narrator is Aldrich who does a splendid job of catching Fira, and in turn us, up to speed with whats going on. So if Aldrich’s life comes into peril, we get why Fira would be so desperate to save him. George Mann creates a wonderful dynamic with these characters. The villian that George comes up with in this issue is meaner than a striped snake, and I love it.

So the other side to this story is the Art. The same people that did the art and color last issue do it in this issue as well. Komikaki Studio featuring Alan Quah does the art and colors. Outstanding work. The colors are like nothing I’ve seen in book for a long while. I like my gritty black and white comics, but I’m a total sucker for technicolor. The new digital age has expanded what an artist can put on a page. Alan Quah gives a great amount of depth. I was amazed last time when I read the first Dark Souls issue, and I’m just as amazed. I still can’t get over this art! In my last review I praised Alan Quah and his talent here.

Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus #2 is every thing I want in a comic book. And yes I recommend this book for others as well. This is a great book for a first time comic book reader.
