Dark Horse’s Angel & Faith #24 Review

Angel 24The resurrection of Rupert Giles did not go as planned. Inhabiting the form of a twelve year old boy, complete with prepubescent angst and an old man’s love for tea, Giles and his relatives must team up with Faith and Angel to take down the big bad who insists on bringing magic back into the world. In what is set up to the be the final battle, Angel tries desperately with violence and discussion to convince Whistler to end his attempts to bring back magic to the world. Instead, magic is leaked onto the people of London and they rapidly begin to change form or have their skin melt off.

Though the title of this comic is Angel and Faith, most of the issue deals with the British cast of characters that have cropped up around them. In fact, the majority of interaction with the two title characters seems like and after thought. Faith is mostly mocked for her less than prim appearance and Angel rips up post boxes and tries to hit demons. The saving grace of this comic does turn out to be humorous lines from Giles’ seemingly ageless aunts. After Giles has struggled to try and keep some power centered during a battle, his aunt remarks,“remember you’re English; no one does repression like us.” The randomness doesn’t stop there. Upon discovering a person turned into a wolf-like creature during the magical fight, the wolf like creature howls that he is now a monster, Giles’ aunt cautions the man not to worry with, “you’ll be the star of the furry conventions.” Christos Gage keeps the humor of the Joss Whedon creation, but the rest of the story feels like it is writing Gage instead of he writing it.

As much as I want to like Rebekah Issacs art work, I just find it too distracting for the story at hand. Her characters are beautifully etched when they are standing in conversation, but in a fight sequence they are a blur of hasty colors and rapidly etched lines. Angel is not the brooding vampire I fell in love with as a teen, but rather a massive foreheaded neanderthal with a trench coat. Faith keeps her white trash appearance, which is rather heartbreaking as her character seems to have grown a sense of morals and emotions.

The difficulty with both the Buffy and Angel series are the fact that if you don’t get in on the ground level with the comic, or heaven’s forbid skip an issue, you will have very little clue to what’s going on. It is absolutely not a comic that you can just pick up in the middle and have a clear understanding on what has come before. While the charming one off lines are entertaining, there’s just not enough to keep a confused reader engaged. Still, it’s worth grabbing the next issue of this comic, if only to see what Angel does now that he has Whistler in his grasp.
