An Interview With Daredevil’s Peter Shinkoda

GameStop, Inc.

SPOILERS! Seriously, these interview questions contain MAJOR SPOILERS for those who have not finished Daredevil: Season Two. If you’re not caught up, go do so and come back. While you’re at it, read my review of Season Two by clicking here.

After finishing Daredevil: Season Two on Netflix about a week or so ago, I got the chance to speak with Peter Shinkoda (Daredevil, Falling Skies, Mortal Kombat: Legacy) about his return as Nobu on season two of Daredevil. Shinkoda played the character of Nobu in Season One; with his memorable fight scene against Daredevil (Charlie Cox), to the obvious clues pointing to his association with The Hand, Nobu was a character I was sad to see go towards the end of Season One. His return from the dead was one of the biggest surprises in Season Two, Peter Shinkoda was back in the role  and far more menacing than before. In my interview, I had the amazing opportunity to ask Peter Shinkoda about his return in Season Two, and his new approach to playing Nobu as a full blown Hand ninja.

In Season One you had a showdown with Daredevil that seemingly left your character crispy and dead; were you aware that there were plans for Nobu to return in Season Two, or was the opportunity to reprise the role again completely a surprise?

PS: After having shot Season One of Daredevil, I was content knowing I may or may not reappear on the show. There was no contract to return, but I knew there was a possibility of  Nobu “resurrecting” because it’s an important trait of The Hand from the comics. I have owned most of the Daredevil comics from the 80’s that have Elektra and The Hand’s introductions, so I am familiar with the “groundwork”. The first season was a success and when Season Two was announced I was given a call soon after by production. I was thrilled to be back, but I wasn’t thrilled that I couldn’t say anything or get a press release about it; that happens a lot with me.

In Season Two of Daredevil the story delves a lot more into the mythology of The Hand; how did the story delving into that lore more than ever before affect your approach to playing Nobu?

Like I mentioned previously, I was very keen to The Hand storylines as a kid because it was one of the few Asian presences in comics that I could very much relate to! Having read and reread the source material many, many times, I believe I had already formulated in my childhood fantasies what kind of Hand lieutenant I would want to see in a live performance, and I just went from there. I also had other points of reference from earlier Hand interpretations; The Wolverine and Elektra featured them, played both times by my old acting school friend, Will Yun Lee. The ironic thing is, the first role I ever turned down in my entire career was a “Hand Servant” role offered to me over a decade ago in Jennifer Garner’s Elektra film. I’m so glad I turned that down now because things have fallen into their proper place.

Thank you, Peter Shinkoda! Watch every episode of Marvel’s Daredevil now, only on Netflix.
