‘The Comedian,’ it’s like ‘Funny People’ only Good

GameStop, Inc.

The Comedian is a fantastic dark comedy starring a who’s who of people famous in 1974, a bunch of should-have-been comics (love you Jim Norton), a should-be-forgotten (cough…cough…Hannibal Buress) and features a couple of always funny as never humorists (Billy Crystal and Grodin).

Robert De Niro stars as aging, down-on-his-luck insult comic named Jackie Burke who had a hit TV show 30 years ago called, Eddie’s Home. After being found in contempt of court for assaulting a heckler trying to become a web sensation, Burke spends 30 days in county and is forced to serve 100 hours of community service.

At this point, he meets Harmony (Leslie Mann), a woman who is serving 250 hours of community service for assaulting her cheating boyfriend and his new lover. A budding friending emerges between the two with Harmony’s prick of a father Mac (Harvey Keitel) constantly over stepping his boundaries by disrespecting everyone around him.

Jackie is no peach as drives his agent, “Killer” Miller (Edie Falco) crazy with his antics, while he pushes everyone away in a world that seems to have passed him by. Think The Wrestler meets Mr. Saturday Night, only without a cameo from the Necro Butcher and far less Crystal.

De Niro is brilliant as always, with better timing than you see from most club comics. Mann is a far superior actress when she’s not being directed by husband and Falco is the ultimate straight woman in the flick. Danny DeVito and his daughter Lucy are also superb and the interaction between comedienne Jessica Kirson and Burke went down like a real exchange in a small club.

The Comedian is a very “New York” style comedy written by Jeff Ross and Art Linson in the vein of 1988’s Punchline. The two hours fly by as The Comedian pulls no punches and if you are a special snow flake, you’re going to cry foul. However, this one is for the adults that think your opinions are as valuable as used toilet paper and can take a joke, which is what comedy is all about.

The Comedian opens in New York and Los Angeles today and in theaters February 3, 2017.

The Verdict

The Comedian is a dark comedy that if you are easily offended by everything you should avoid at all costs while wearing your safety pin and sucking on your pacifier while the real adults laugh.
