Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale

GameStop, Inc.

Based on the classic Archie Comics series and a revamp of the Melissa Joan Hart, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: a Midwinter’s Tale is just what every pagan-ish fan needs this winter.

It’s Christmas/Winter Solstice in the witching world as Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and her aunts Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) begin to prepare for the festivities. Flashing back to yesteryear Susie (Lachlan Watson) and Sabrina visit Santa as the future witch wishes to see her mother for the holiday.

Fast forward to today and Zelda has a conniption in calling it a “Christmas Tree,” where Hilda slaps her back down into place reminding her that someone who hates the holiday so much, then she’s sure has a lot of gifts under the tree.

As the family looks for protection in lighting the Yule Log, Sabrina gets the bright idea of having a seance to contact her late mother during the Winter Solstice because it is the weakest point between the worlds of the living in the dead.

Little does Sabrina know that the person who she would seek help from, Ms. Mary Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) aka Madame Satan is plotting with the Dark Lord to do some serious damage to the teen witch. Ms. Wardwell’s plan begins to unfold after allowing Sabrina to use her Book of the Dead for the events to come.

Naturally, Sabrina’s friends are apprehensive about helping her out in conjuring the dead, especially with how uninformed she is about the dark arts and using her powers. Being shunned by for her plan and Harvey (Ross Lynch) still being apprehensive around her, Sabrina turns to three other teen witches, Purdence (Tati Gabrielle), Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) and Dorcas (Abigail F. Cowen) to help with her plan in speaking with her mortal mother.

All this and it’s only been 15 minutes…wait until you see how all hell breaks loose!

This is my first encounter with the new Sabrina TV series and it is far darker than the previous incarnation that aired on ABC’s TGIF line up. However, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has transformed his Archie Horror comics interpretation of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina into a world that embraces magic and those that choose to use it for good or evil. Aguirre-Sacasa has done some serious research on the these topics and what originated in the comics translates exceptionally well to Netflix…although I’m not too thrilled with Satan being their chief deity, but hey, it’s television.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: a Midwinter’s Tale drops Friday, December 14, 2018 on Netflix.

  • Overall Score
3.8

Summary

I’m definitely not the target demo, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa brings his comic creation to life and this is exactly how a dark version of Sabrina should look.
