The Cast of ‘Supernatural’ Haunts Nerd HQ during San Diego Comic Con

GameStop, Inc.

SDCC 2016 - 15 of 33

Sunday at San Diego Comic Con has long been Supernatural day, with their fans taking over Hall H in the morning.  Counting myself as a member of the fandom (aka the Supernatural Family), I attended the Hall H and Nerd HQ Supernatural panels.  My morning started early with Misha Collins (Castiel) and his charity, Random Acts of Kindness, bringing granola bars to those of us waiting in the infamous Hall H line.

Richard Speight (Gabriel) and Rob Benedict (Chuck aka God) returned to host the Hall H panel, which brought out the new co-show runners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer.  Dabb is a longtime writer for Supernatural and Singer is returning to the show runner role after a hiatus.  The cast filled out the rest of the panel with the regulars, Jared Padalecki (Sam), Jensen Ackles (Dean), Misha Collins, and Mark Sheppard (Crowley), recurring cast member Ruth Connell (Rowena), and returning in a new way Samantha Smith (Mary.)  In the season finale, we saw Mary (Sam and Dean’s mother) return from the dead and her new role for the upcoming season is going to have huge implications for the Winchester boys according to Dabb.  They promised the twelfth season of Supernatural will return to its monster-of-the-week roots focusing on family relationships – the boys and their mom, as well as Crowley and his mom – instead of the boys fighting a “big bad.”

The Nerd HQ panel was the four regulars: Jared, Jensen, Misha, and Mark.  They spent the hour joking around with each other showing the camaraderie of this cast and answering audience questions.  They started the panel making fun of Misha’s proclivity for using Facebook Live, apparently Jensen and Jared do all they can to interrupt his sessions including calling him as soon as he goes Live.  The cast spoke about how much they enjoy working together and not really wanting the show to end, but that the show is bigger than any one of them.  They have had discussions of what the end game should be.  Jared and Jensen both said they would be interested in doing a Supernatural movie.  Mark spoke of their love of the fans, how they augment the show and are the glue that holds it all together.  He said it was the most humbling thing in the world.

Most of the panel was much less serious, often discussing each other’s bodily functions.  Jensen was proud to have taught Jared the “pull my finger” joke.  Misha had a story of how he had gas so bad on an airplane that the gentleman sitting behind him fainted – twice.  They also cast their characters in an all-female reboot of Supernatural: Sam played by Gal Gadot, Hillary Clinton as Castiel, and Jensen would cast his wife (Daneel Ackles) as Dean because “she is a badass.”  At the end of the panel, the cast even assisted a couple fans with their baby announcement.

The way this cast interacts with each other and their fans it is easy to see how this is the longest running Sci-fi show on television.
