Buffy: The Core Part 2

buffy 22Buffy, Willow and Xander desperately try to find a way inside the Deeper Well entrance in Cotswold, England . The Deeper Well is the tomb for the original demons and evils of the world, and possibly the only way to save Buffy’s sister. Back home, Dawn is leaching magic slowly but surely and soon nothing will remain of her existence. She was created out of magic to be the “key,” but with the magic of the universe being pulled away due to the destruction of “The Seed” in past issues, Dawn will likely not be around for much longer. Spike arrives to try and remind Dawn of her existence, but discovers that he is starting to forget her as well. He gets a tape recorder and begins to record her history so that it will not be forgotten. The council is out en force, doing everything in it’s power to keep Buffy and the crew out. In New Zealand, Severin is working to break into the alternate entrance for the Deeper Well. Xander has secretly partnered with them to save Dawn, and is unfortunately putting Buffy in danger in the process. Buffy discovers Xander’s betrayal, suddenly realizing she can’t trust him when it comes to Dawn.

Andrew Chamblis gets the dialogue just right for Willow and Buffy in this issue. While fighting, they are quipping and referencing like the days of the television show. The snark is quick and entertaining. Xander being the betrayer is not really all that much of a surprise, as it has already been established that he feels he has to be involved in the fight to save Dawn. Chamblis having Xander refer to one of the demons as Star Trek’s Worf did bring a chuckle to this reviewer.

Georges Jeanty and Dexter Vines do an excellent job of recreating the characters for the comic, and Michelle Madsen blends the colors in such a way that the wicked seem wicked and the good come out shining. Dawn’s portrayal in white is very off putting, but does really confirm for the reader that she is rapidly dissipating as her magic leaves her body. One of the best drawings was the little girl with the red balloon who guards the Deeper Well entrance in New Zealand. As a Whovian, the design of the girl did seem a touch too familiar.

While the storytelling of the “Ninth Season” is good, it lacks the feel of Buffy. The humorous dialogue is there, as are the copious amounts of pop culture reference, but the comic has used the save the world card so many times that it feels like Buffy really doesn’t have much to lose in fighting an insurmountable foe. With Willow back in the story line, I was expecting a bit more familiarity. Perhaps as the story arc concludes we will get a bit more of the Buffy magic back.
