‘BOOM! Studios’ Roundup Reviews: Week of February 10th

last_sons_of_america_003_a_mainLast Sons of America #3 (of 4)

Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson

Artist: Matthew Dow Smith

Jackie and Sara are on the run while Julian is held captive. Can Jackie get Sara safely out of the country, or will Don Carlo catch them before Sara can escape?

I might be in the minority on this, but I’m someone who had a hard time passing Spanish in high school. It seems like almost half of this book is in Spanish, and I had a hard time following it, but with that said I still love the story and the characters are well written. I also think this issue had a faster pace than this issue, but the previous issues tense and stressful moments are sorely missed here.

It’s weird writing this review because I held Last Sons of America #2 in such high regards; I mean, issue #3 isn’t bad at all, but it’s…different. Issue #2 was this super intense thrill ride with a jolting shift in tone that somehow worked, and issue #3 is mostly just your standard chase sequence. Jackie and Sara are on the run, and that’s the majority of what we get in this issue. It looks great, Matthew Dow Smith is still putting out excellent work, and Phillip Kennedy Johnson writes fun dialogue (when I can actually read it in English), but it’s just not as compelling as the last two issues and with one issue left the story really should have escalated and not diminish.

The Verdict – 8.0/10

Screen-Shot-2016-02-10-at-1.02.19-PMSnow Blind #3 (of 4)

Writer: Ollie Masters

Artist: Tyler Jenkins

Teddy survives his encounter with Trent and continues his investigation into the truth.

I’m not a fan of this book; I cannot relate to the character of Teddy, and I can’t get into the art style.  Tyler Jenkins has a blog I’ve checked out which features a lot of his work, and he’s talented! His work is appealing, but his style choices with Snow Blind are baffling, and I can’t get behind them, I just can’t. There’s a very popular adage that goes “Show, don’t tell”, and what it means is that you shouldn’t beat your audience over the head with wordy exposition. Teddy figures out big plot points in the story and we don’t see how he does it, he just magically does through exposition. We don’t see Teddy investigate anything, Teddy just tells us he has everything figured out and we’re supposed to roll with it.

Speaking of Teddy, I don’t understand why we’re supposed to view his Father as a sinister figure; we don’t know much about him besides what Teddy has told us. Show him as a ruthless, or at least a questionable, person. Teddy literally points a gun at his head and seriously considers shooting him and it felt so out of left field. We haven’t heard his Father’s side of the story, and Teddy is making a lot of rash assumptions about his Father. Teddy is poorly written, and I hate him. There’s one more issue of this series, and unless the finale blows me away, I feel like this book is just a waste; and this is the worst issue I’ve read by far.

The Verdict – 4.0/10

LanternCity-010-A-Main-34ae4Lantern City #10

Writers: Matthew Daley & Mairghread Scott

Artist: Carlos Magno

The City is under attack, and Sanders must make a desperate move to put an end to Killian.

I like Lantern City, but I’m noticing an annoying pattern; a lot of the action takes place off panel. We hear that the people of Lantern City are under attack from the Fortache, but a majority of the story follows Sanders inside as he tries to reason with people. I want to actually see the struggle between the lower class, the Fortache, and the soldiers of Lantern City, not just hear about it while we focus on Sanders.

With that annoyance brought to light, this issue wasn’t anything special. It was refreshing to see that someone finally found out Sanders’ secret, but ultimately it went nowhere. I feel like Sanders had the same conversation with Lizel just a few issues ago. I was happy to see the action pick up a bit at the end, but it was too late. I’m just getting tired of getting teased and not having Lantern City deliver on the goods.

The Verdict – 7.0/10
