‘BOOM! Studios’ Roundup Reviews: Week of December 23rd

GameStop, Inc.

venus_1Venus #1

Writer: Rick Loverd

Artist: Huang Danlan

Venus #1 is a story about a crew of Americans struggling to survive in the harshness of the planet Venus.

If I had to describe the story, I’d say it’s a cross between Star Trek and The Martian; you have a crew that has a lot of personality and the stakes are set terribly high early on; these people want to survive even though they might not agree on the best approach accomplishing that goal. The story is set in 2150 , and aside from something that happens at the end, it seems they’re playing it fairly realistic; no aliens, and no space wars, etc. I dig this approach, and there is a mystery that isn’t necessarily dwelled upon (the characters are too busy trying to survive), but it does offer a lot of possibilities.

The art is very cinematic. There’s great care and detail in the characters and you get a feel for their personalities just by the way they’re drawn. The dialogue is well written, and I’m looking forward to issue #2

The Verdict – 8.5/ 10

Peanuts #29Peanuts_029_A_Main-932x1432
Writers: Charles M. Schulz, Jason Cooper
Artists: Charles M. Schulz, Vicki Scott

Charlie Brown gets called up to join Peppermint Pattie’s baseball team…sort of.

I love The Peanuts Gang, and with the fantastic movie that hit theaters a couple of months ago, it sparked a renewed interest in the classic stories and animated movies. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz created the story, and it’s written by Jason Cooper and Vicki Scott. Both Cooper and Scott do a fantastic at capturing the spirit of Schulz’s work. The color is slightly off, but it’s not bothersome.

I really liked how simple the plot was, and I recommend it for anyone who liked the new movie, any of the old ones, the animated shows, and of course the long-running Sunday comic strip, because Schulz’s work is in good hands here.

The Verdict – 9/10

EFNY-13-A-Main-7f8b5Escape from New York #13

Writer: Christopher Sebela

Artist: Maxim Simic

Set 12 years after the events of the film, Snake Plissken is trying to live a life of peace and quiet, but the USPF won’t let him be and Snake is forced back into action.

I love John Carpenter’s Escape from New York, and this comic series has definitely captured the spirit of the first film far more than the second one. Snake Plissken as an older man retiring from his ways is an interesting concept, and almost reminds me of Marvel’s Old Man Logan back in 2008; both are iconic characters that are done being who they used to be and just want to be left alone.  It very much feels like a continuation of the film series, maybe more so than any of the previous issues I’ve read. I feel some of the earlier ones felt a tad bit too much like a retread…an enjoyable retread, but a retread nonetheless, and this feels like a progression.

I enjoyed the way Christopher Sebela portrayed Plissken, and none of his words felt out of place in the world or for the character. Maxim Simic does a great job with the art, but his backgrounds can be a bit static and detail lacking. Overall, I love this book and I recommend it to any fans of the films.

The Verdict – 8.5/10
