‘BOOM! Studios’ Roundup Reviews: Week of December 9th

STK690185Snow Blind #1

Writer: Ollie Masters

Artist: Tyler Jenkins

Snow Blind is a noir tale of Teddy, a teenager who tries to unravel a deep-rooted mystery regarding his family history in a snowy, Alaskan setting.

Within the pages of Snow Blind, the art by Tyler Jenkins is muted and abstract. I don’t find it particularly pleasing to the eyes, and there were also a couple of instances where I couldn’t tell the difference between the characters; their designs were too similar and the art style was too abstract. The premise is interesting, if not fairly conventional, but the writing by Ollie Masters is solid and captivating.

Honestly, I wasn’t very impressed with the first issue, and the mysteries pushing the
story forward might not be enough to keep someone coming back for issue #2.

The Verdict – 6.0/10

AdventureTime_047_A_Main-932x1432Adventure Time #47

Writer: Chris Hastings

Artist: Zachary Sterling

Adventure Time is based on the popular cartoon series seen on Cartoon Network, and stars Finn, Jake, and the other cast of oddball heroes and villains.

I’m not a die-hard fan of Adventure Time, and admittedly this is the first issue I’ve ever read in the ongoing and it’s issue #47, there’s a great deal I’ve likely missed, but it looks like the cartoon and it reads like the cartoon, therefore I’m going to guess that fans of the cartoon are going to love it. Christopher Hastings does a fantastic job in capturing the oddities and eccentricities.

The Verdict – 7.0/10

LanternCity_008_A_Main-932x1432Lantern City #8
Matthew Daley, Paul Jenkins

Artist(s): Carlos Magno

Lantern City takes place in a steam-punk world where the lower class live in darkness and the wealthy live in beautiful cities in the sky. Created by Trevor Crafts, Matthew Daley, and TRON’s Bruce Boxleitner, Lantern City tells the story of Sander Jorve infiltrates the upper class in order to carry out a dangerous mission and protect his wife and son.

This issue started out really slow, but once Sanders ran into his niece Lizel it picked up a great deal. It was really fun to see Lizel question Sander’s allegiance to their cause and calling him out for enjoying the luxurious perks of Guard life. The series isn’t friendly to new readers jumping into it, but it’s only eight issues in and if you’re into steam-punk stories with heavy influences of Jules Verne with more focus on the dialogue than action, it’d be worth it to pick up the other issues; I really dig this book. The art by Carlos Magno is fantastic at showing the contrast between the upscale life up high, and the gritty hellish and dark tunnels below.

The Verdict – 8.5/10
