Black Science #13: Just Another Day in the Life of a Dimensionaut

GameStop, Inc.

Black Science #13 CoverBlack Science #13 finds the travelers still stranded in the high-tech Roman world dealing with the kind of mess that happens when one man’s mistress kills another version of him in front of the alternate version of his wife while their daughter looks on. Also, it seems that another version of the group brought a plague to this world, and the natives (or what remains of them) are not happy.

Just another day in the life of a dimensionaut.

Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera are keeping Black Science moving in odd directions, continuing to put the group into all kinds of unexpected peril and gleefully taking and twisting science fiction tropes to suit themselves. Black Science #13 actually does explain a bit about the Pillar’s directions, though not yet why all of its appearances in any plane appear to be unmitigated disasters. It also has one of the strongest emotional moments yet as Pia confronts her mother’s alternate in the midst of chaos.

Scalera and Moreno Dinisio continue the tradition of taking pulp art traditions and updating them to suit their needs. The alternate Rome? We’ve been there before, but not like this. Everything is oddly angular, yet facial expressions remain clear as does body language. Dinisio provides an added dimension with deep colors, textured and patterned backgrounds, bright flames, and on occasion, flecks or pools of blood.

I cannot tell just how confusing a new reader might find things, stepping in at this point, but Remender does provide a good summary at the beginning, and I can tell you that this is something no self-respecting science fiction fan will want to miss.

Speaking of confusion, Remender writes in the letters column, “Over the next few issues we are changing the trajectory of the series and where you thought it was going.” Personally, I have never had any idea where this crazy series was going. That happens to be one of the things I like about it, but I do find myself boggling at the idea of yet more craziness—stretched out over at least three years as Remender and Scalera now things planned out up to issue fifty. What about you? Any theories about where it is going or what might change, short term or long?

Black Science #13 is available April 1, 2015 from Image Comics.
