Bite Size Review – Miitomo (and My Nintendo)

GameStop, Inc.

We don’t always have a lot of time to play games. Maybe you just don’t feel like getting into an eighty hour+ RPG. Sometimes you just want to start a game that’s simple; one that you can just jump in and not worry about saving, or customizing and upgrading your character. Maybe you are on a bus, train or plane. You just want to play. These are bite size games, and this is Bite Size Reviews. Today we look at Miitomo, Nintendo’s first smartphone app…game…social networking thing.

So I’m not really one to play smartphone games. My battery life could be used for better things: Youtube, the internet, listening to music. When I do play a game on my phone, I’ll play it for maybe a day or two, a week tops, then I lose interest. Everyone says with how much more powerful phones are getting that the days of traditional gaming, or at least handheld gaming, is numbered. If that’s the case then I’m out, because smartphone gaming, for me at least, has two problems: the lack of buttons and mediocre battery life on anything with a resolution greater than HD. So to actually take the time to check out, and actually care to do a review on, a smartphone game it has to be something. Well, Miitomo is… sort of.

Miitomo is not technically a game. It is a smartphone application that combines social networking with, the only thing I can think of from my experience, the Everybody Votes channel from back on the Wii. I’ve heard of Tomodachi Life, but I never got around to trying it. You create a mii from scratch or import your existing mii from your 3DS or Wii U. From there you go through a few tutorial missions. Basically, you are presented with a question to which you provide an answer too. Rinse and repeat. Afterwards, you can see your friends answers and you can “heart” them or leave comments. There is also a game within the app called Mii Drop. Mii Drop is a pachinko type game where you drop your friend’s miis and to try and get clothing for your mii that you cannot get in the mii clothing shop. You can also get candy, which is used to give your friend’s miis to see some of their answers to questions.

As you play the app you earn two types of Miitomo coins: regular and platinum. Regular Miitomo coins can be spent in the in-game mii shop to buy clothes to customize you mii. Platinum Miitomo coins are the same as platinum My Nintendo coins, just earned by using the Miitomo app. My Nintendo is the replacement for Club Nintendo, Nintendo’s old rewards program. Platinum coins are earn by either logging into the website, miiverse or the eShop or by playing/using games and apps. Gold coins are earned by buying games on the eShop. The rewards you can get depends on the coins you have, the better rewards (bigger downloadable games) are redeemed with gold coins. At the moment, your platinum coins can get you smaller downloadable titles, Miitomo items and discounts on eShop titles. Rewards will rotate every so often and unlike Club Nintendo one+ year expiration, My Nintendo coins expire after 6 months. Can’t really complain since it is free, but if nothing shows up that you want, there could be a lot of wasted coin.

So how does Miitomo fare as a bite size piece of entertainment? Pretty well, actually. I downloaded it the morning and throughout the day I kept checking in on it, answering questions, checking out friend’s answers, playing Mii Drop. If anything, it is a good way to get some extra My Nintendo coins.

Miitomo is now available for Android and iOS devices.

The Verdict

Miitomo isn’t much of a “game” as it is a good way to kill some time. Pretty decent for Nintendo’s first outing for mobile devices. Only time will tell how long it’ll keep people’s attention, though. If anything, it can be used as a quick and easy way to earn some My Nintendo platinum coins.
