Bite Size Reviews: Blast Off with “Jetpac” and “Lunar Jetman” on Xbox One

GameStop, Inc.

We don’t always have a lot of time to play games. Maybe you just don’t feel like getting into an eighty hour+ RPG. Sometimes you just want to start a game that’s simple. One that you can just jump in and not worry about saving, or customizing and upgrading your character. You just want to go. These are bite size games, and this is Bite Size Reviews. Today we look at Jetpac and Lunar Jetman. Two games that are part of Rare Replay on Xbox One.

Jetpac was originally released in 1983 on the ZX Spectrum by Ultimate Play the Game, who would eventually go on to be purchased by Rare, LTD, another company by founders Tim and Chris Stamper. In Jetpac, you play as Jetman, an outer space explorer. During the first level you must rebuild Jetman’s spaceship while avoiding being hit by alien life. In subsequent levels, your ship remains intact, however you do need to refuel it. During each level, there are various items you can collect to earn bonus points.

Lunar Jetman was also originally released in 1983 for the ZX Spectrum. Once again, you play as Jetman as he tries to destroy alien bases on the moon. In addition to your jetpack, you also have a lunar rover to traverse the moon’s terrain. The rover also acts as a refueling station for your jetpack and lets you transport various pieces of equipment: a cannon, a transporter, and a bomb. The bomb is needed to destroy the alien bases. This must be done within a limited amount of time.

So how do these fare for pick up and play action? For Jetpac, pretty good. The games do load fairly fast and the controls and gameplay are simple enough, so it is quick to just jump in and go. As for Lunar Jetman? I suppose if you already know the game, sure, but for someone who hasn’t played before, I did not know what the heck I was doing. The help manual wasn’t much help either (when it wanted to load as it kept freezing on me). So if you have an Xbox One, have Rare Replay and need to kill a little bit of time, give Jetpac a whirl.

Jetpac and Lunar Jetman
  • 7/10
    Gameplay - 7/10
  • 6.5/10
    Mechanics - 6.5/10

The Verdict

Jetpac is great for quick bursts of play but, unless you know how to play, Lunar Jetman takes some figuring out.
