‘Before Dawn’ Rises to be a Great War Epic Film – Review

GameStop, Inc.

Before Dawn‘ rises to the expectations of a great war film, that does not insult those believing in honor and glory, but also sheds light on the tragedies.

Before Dawn‘, directed by Jordon Prince-Wright, is a gripping and poignant war film that brings to life the harrowing experiences of soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during World War I. Based on real-life war diaries, this cinematic retelling captures the profound sacrifices made by these young men and highlights one of Australia’s most significant military victories.

Before Dawn‘ centers around the fictional Jim Collins, portrayed by Levi Miller, who leaves behind his family’s sheep farm in the Australian outback to join his comrades on the Western Front. Initially driven by a sense of duty and a desire to bring about the war’s end, he soon finds himself engulfed in the grimness of trench warfare. The film does an exceptional job of portraying the psychological and physical toll of battle, as the protagonist grapples with the constant threat of death and the responsibility of ensuring his comrades’ safety. Miller’s performance is both heartfelt and raw, making the character’s struggles deeply relatable and impactful.

The supporting cast of ‘Before Dawn‘, including Travis Jeffery as Thomas, Myles Pollard as Sgt Beaufort, and Ed Oxenbould as Don, adds depth to the story, each bringing their own stories of bravery and sacrifice to the forefront. The ensemble work is commendable, effectively showcasing the bonds forged in the crucible of war.

Prince-Wright’s direction, combined with Jarrad Russell’s co-written script, balances moments of intense action with quieter, reflective scenes that allow the audience to grasp the emotional weight of the soldiers’ experiences. The film’s cinematography is particularly noteworthy, capturing both the stark beauty of the Australian landscape and the brutal conditions of the trenches, immersing viewers in the era’s atmosphere.

Before Dawn‘ also includes an array of bonus materials, such as behind-the-scenes featurettes that delve into the authenticity of the portrayal, the story’s development, and the dedication of the cast and crew. With a runtime of approximately 101 minutes and rated R for war violence and language, the film does not shy away from depicting the harsh realities of war, making it a poignant viewing experience.

Before Dawn‘ debuts on Blu-ray™ and DVD on September 24, 2024 from Well Go USA Entertainment, the film is a powerful tribute to courage, camaraderie, and the harsh realities of war.

4.5

Summary

Before Dawn‘ is an essential addition to the war film genre, skillfully blending historical authenticity with compelling storytelling. It’s a cinematic experience that will resonate with viewers long after the credits roll, reminding us of the bravery of those who fought and the enduring impact of their sacrifices.
