Now that they’ve already changed the face of television, Netflix is hoping to make a major splash in the world of cinema. But their four-picture deal with Adam Sandler doesn’t begin until December. In the meantime, cinema lovers will just have to settle for Beasts of No Nation, the new film from Cary Fukunaga, which sees Idris Elba as an African warlord known simply as the Commandant who over sees an army of child soldiers. Fukunaga probably best known for directing the entirety of True Detective‘s first season, leaving the crushing disappointment of its follow up to others.
But Netflix is betting on Beasts of No Nation to be a serious awards contender. The film will be screening at the Venice, Toronto, London, and Telluride Film Festivals later this month in anticipation of its debut on October 16th, which will see Beasts of No Nation debut on Netflix’s streaming platform along with select Landmark Theaters.
The official synopsis for Beasts of No Nation:
Beasts of No Nation is based on the highly acclaimed novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, bringing to life the gripping tale of Agu, a child soldier torn from his family to fight in the civil war of an African country. Newcomer Abraham Attah gives a stunning portrayal of Agu, while Elba dominates the screen in the role of Commandant, a warlord who takes in Agu and instructs him in the ways of war.
