Battlestar Galactica Starbuck 02 CoverAs promised, Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck #2 takes place ten years after Starbuck #1. Starbuck and Apollo are both pilots now, serving on the Galactica under Adama’s command, and Starbuck is missing patrol—again. This time, he’s had bad news about his foster family, killed in a Cylon attack, and he’s not taking it well. Their deaths reignite his interest in the chip given to him in the last issue, a chip he has apparently not thought about since then.

Some of the tension is undercut here by these being the “missing years” in Starbuck’s life: We know he and his friends will live through any threat presented in the issue. What is needed to overcome this is a strong cast of characters and a villain compelling enough to make his intermediate status easy to overlook. Unfortunately, the pair shown here don’t quite meet that level. At the moment, they’re a fairly standard politician and his ruthless daughter; serviceable but not strong enough to overlook the fact that everyone reading knows their schemes to destroy Starbuck are doomed.

What Lee does provide is a good portrait of the friendship forming between Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer. It’s clearly already strong, but not yet at the point where Apollo trusts Starbuck without question. There is still some friction between the two. Hopefully, the next issue will show more of the developing relationship.

Cassallos is still doing a good job providing a view of the younger versions of the Galactica crew, and his pictured villain is strong, a piratical sort. His recreation of the Galactica, complete with its dated view of advanced computer systems, is a joy, and it’s always good to see Vipers in action.

Starbuck #2 is not quite up to the standards of Starbuck #1, but still an enjoyable read.
