Bad Trip Review

If you have ever watch the Adult Swim talk show The Eric Andre Show, you know that Eric Andre isn’t operating on the same plane of existence as everyone else. Nobody is currently pushing comedic boundaries more than Eric Andre. I could’ve typed that last sentence anytime over the past couple of years and it would’ve been true. But now, having seen Andre’s long-delayed prank movie Bad Trip, it is gospel. Bad Trip isn’t just another prank movie. This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. In a way, director Kitao Sakurai should be grateful his film shifted to Netflix after the pandemic derailed its theatrical release last year. If Bad Trip played in theaters, there’s a serious possibility that it could’ve resulted in multiple deaths from laughter. Personally, I was grateful to be watching the film at home where I could pause to allow myself to catch my breath and regain my composure.

Like prior prank movies – such as Bad Grandpa and the Borat films – Bad Trip’s craziness unfolds as Chris (Andre) and his best friend Bud (Lil Rel Howery) take a road trip from Florida to New York City. Prank movies typically take the form of a road trip film because it’s necessary in order to fly under the radar. The production can’t be called out on social media or local news if they’re moving from town to town. What Eric Andre does with Bad Trip is to use the prank movie template of a road trip and very simple plot and push the concept further than anybody with some of the most outrageous gags ever presented in a motion picture.

The first part of Bad Trip has Andre’s Chris working a couple unglamourous jobs in Florida. Chris encounters his high school crush Maria Yi (Michaela Conlin) – innocent customer must awkwardly stand there as he stares at her with his jaw agape. After a bit of small talk, Maria revels she lives in New York where she runs an art gallery, politely handing Chris a business card with an invitation to stop by. Chris takes this gesture as a moment of true love and abandons his dead end jobs. This results in the most inventive musical number in a movie since Bob Fosse reinvented what a musical could be with Cabaret. In a matter of minutes, Bad Trips establishes its insanely audacious spirit.

Chris convinces Bud to take his sister’s car on the road trip. The pink Crown Victoria emblazoned with the moniker “Bad Bitch” is the prized possession of Bud’s sister Trina (Tiffany Haddish), who is currently incarcerated. However, Trina has just made a daring escape and is now out to hunt down Chris and Bud for daring to take her beloved car without permission.

I don’t want to give away the details to the numerous insane pranks that Eric Andre and company pull off in Bad Trip. Needless to say, the multitude of gags unleashed upon me keep me howling with laughter. The pace of the gags is unrelenting. A lot of comedies follow a big hilarious scene with a bit of lull to give the audience a chance to relax before bringing forth the next big laugh. Bad Trip doesn’t have lulls. From start to finish, it delivers big, jaw-dropping laughs.

One thing that Bad Trip does exceptionally well is making the reactions of regular people be part of the joke without making them the butt of the joke. Placing somebody is a wild situation and laughing at their reaction is the heart of these gags. As Bad Trip continually pushes the boundaries of taste and decency, the film never devolves into-mean spiritedness. Actually, Bad Trip repeatedly finds a way throughout its comedic chaos to highlight the inherent decency and humanity of its average people. The point of this movie is push people’s buttons for a comedic response and yet time and time again it doesn’t just deliver big laughs but also highlights everyday people stepping up to do the right thing in the craziest of situations.

The genius of Bad Trip isn’t that it completely rewrites the rules of the prank movie, but that it takes the established form and pushes it new limits. The makers of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm must be thrilled that they didn’t have to come out after Bad Trip; because while the Borat sequel was very funny, Bad Trip is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. There’s no shortage of surprises throughout Bad Trip, and some of these shocking moments will stick with you for days after the movie is over. One thing that’s not surprising about Bad Trip is that Eric Andre is a comedy genius, but in that kind of deranged-but-brilliant supervillain kind of way.

Bad Trip
  • Overall Score

A brazenly audacious prank movie, Eric Andre’s insanely hilarious Bad Trip pushes the boundaries of taste and decency in the most glorious ways possible, delivering one of the funniest movies in years.
