Avengers Academy

Avengers Academy is a builder/freemium game from TinyCo. It is an amazingly well put together game that puts Earth’s mightiest heroes in what seems to be a modern day college comedy. Tony Stark is the genius slacker, Wasp as the Popular Girl, Black Widow as the independent loner, Nick Fury as the Dean, and so on. It is a very unique take on the Avengers and I personally would love to see Avengers Academy become a cartoon. The opening sequence was beautifully rendered and the voice actors seem perfectly cast for their roles.

Screenshot_2016-02-05-21-00-19Avengers Academy has a surprisingly well constructed story that plays through logically and hilariously. Players begin with a few students, and recruit more students, to help defend from the rival Hydra Academy, then eventually moving onto going against AIM. Also recently introduced are events, which are like pop up stories for players to complete to get new characters. The current event going on now has The Leader attacking Avengers Academy with A-Bomb and Red Hulk. Each character you unlock/receive has their own unique story mission and actions that go into their abilities and personalities. They embody their source material while being different enough to be unique and interesting.

Screenshot_2016-02-04-11-49-12The look of Avengers Academy is also another high point. You can zoom in and see a surprising amount of detail in the environment, buildings, and characters.  It also seems each sprite is unique and not just the same sprite layered with another character over them. The soundtrack has a hint of the Avengers’ theme from the movies, as well a college fight song. The voice acting is great, and I am sure Dave Franco is the voice of Tony Stark. I am too lazy to Google that, and also don’t care that much.

Screenshot_2016-02-21-18-57-47Story and Mechanics wise, the game is near flawless. However, gameplay is the opposite. To be short, you do absolutely nothing in the game. If you have played The Simpsons Tap Out you will know what I am talking about. The game is Clash of Clans without the ability to battle. It is pretty much what Dragons: Rise of Berk was before they added the base defense. You click a character, assign a task, and wait for them to finish. It’s like The Sims with even less payoff, because the characters do not develop at all until you have enough resources to upgrade them, or pay to buy them new clothes. After upgrading or buying another costume, you get a few more actions. The game is the embodiment of pointless.

Screenshot_2016-02-04-01-52-37This is not new or unique to a lot of games based on popular franchises. However, Avengers Academy is shamefully obvious about trying to get users to spend money. There is a main story quest that doesn’t go away that will reward you with Iso-8 (Marvel’s premium gaming currency) if you buy the $19.99 package of coins. It has been there for a month and stays there, acting as if it’s some goal you have to accomplish to really beat the game. It’s extremely manipulative and would likely dupe many, especially young children, to spend money. Not to mention the characters who can only be bought with Iso-8. They introduce characters into the story who seem like they will eventually become available, but are in fact only available to be purchased via premium currency.

Screenshot_2016-02-04-02-04-44The entire game is a well constructed vacuum for money. For example, it purposely gives players tasks that use the same space. It makes sense in general that players cannot occupy say the same shooting lane or Asgardian workstation. What doesn’t make any sense is when a character cannot read at the library in one of the other empty spaces because another character is in the selected character’s usual spot. It doesn’t matter which lane a character uses in the target range, why should it matter which chair they sit in to read. Also how come only one character can shoot pool at a time? Pool is a multiplayer game… It is infuriatingly annoying. The only solace the game gives is that if a character’s task is within 30 seconds of completion, you are allowed to fast complete for free. In any other case you are required to pay with Iso-8 to fast complete.

I do not recommend this game unless you have patience or you are completely okay with spending your money on nothing. If you are prone to accidentally buying in-app purchases, stay away from this game. Avengers Academy is a very well put together game that features a unique and enjoyable story, with equally enjoyable graphics and sound to support it. However, it is actually a very polished facade designed to get users to spend their money.

Avengers Academy is available for free in the App Store and Google Play.

The Verdict

The game has an intersting story and is very well made, but the complete lack of depth in gameplay and the infuriatingly obvious cash grab makes the game pretty unbearable.
