“Batman: Assault on Arkham” is the next direct-to-video DC animated original movies. Unlike any of the previous movies, this one is based off the “Arkham” Batman video game series. The movie acts as a sequel to “Arkham Origins.” The movie begins with the Riddler and Amanda Waller having a conflict over some sensitive information, with Waller attempting to eliminate him when the he does not hand it over. He is saved by Batman only to be thrown into Arkham Asylum. Waller then “employs” the Suicide Squad to retrieve the information, and the movie then follows the Suicide Squad and their clashing personalities, constant in-fighting, and generous use of insults.
“Batman: Assault on Arkham” is unlike any super hero movie out, mainly because it focuses on the villains. It is by far the most mature animated feature to come from DC and pushes the medium to some amazing heights. The movie is bloody, dark humored, and a very fluid and masterful use of animation. It’s full of laughs, intense action, and some borderline nudity. Assault on Arkham is also probably the best video game movie ever made; living proof that a good movie can be made from a video game while still respecting the source material.
The cast behind the film is one of the strongest ensemble voice casts to grace an animated feature. Kevin Conroy reprising his role as the Dark Knight, Troy Baker having another go as the Joker, with previous Joker John DiMaggio voicing King Shark are just the tip of the ice berg. You might recognize CCH Pounder as she reprises her role as Amanda Waller, Neal McDonough as Deadshot, or Gustavo Fring actor, Giancarlo Esposito, as Black Spider. Every voice is perfectly cast and portrayed. Watch this clip of Baker and DiMaggio have a Joker laugh off if you need more convincing:
“Batman: Assault on Arkham” is another win for DC Animated Movies. Jay Oliva & James Tucker make another great movie based on beloved, or reviled, DC characters. They pack the movie with a bunch of big name characters, but also do a great job in bringing some lesser known ones into the light and making them likeable. “Assault on Arkham” is a must see for fans of the DC Universe. It is the most mature of the DC Animated movies since “Flashpoint Paradox” so I do not recommend letting letting children watch it. “Batman: Assault on Akrham” is available now for digital download and the Blu-Ray/DVD release will be on August 12, 2014.
