Most Anticipated Games of 2017

With so many exciting games to look forward to, here is our list of the Most Anticipated Games of 2017.

Most Anticipated Games of 2017

For Honor

When first announced, For Honor turned many heads. For Honor re-imagines the fighting genre of video games into a medieval battle for glory. Three factions, the Knights, Vikings, and Samurai, battle for dominance across the land. There are four different classes of heroes to choose from, these include; Vanguard, Heavy, Assassin, and Hybrid, with 12 heroes total and 6 more on the way. With an over the shoulder third person view, For Honor‘s combat is based on a three-direction attack/defend system.

Thrown into the mix are mechanics like parrying, guard breaking, and dodging, that give the game a more strategic atmosphere. Many people are excited for a fighting game that won’t call for as much button-mashing. You can read our review of For Honor here for more information.

Release date: February 14, on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action/adventure role playing game that takes place a long time after humanity has been overrun by machines. You take control of Aloy, a curious young woman on a mission to discover the mysteries of Earth. What has been described as a mix of all the best things from games such as Far Cry, The Witcher, and Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn has garnered a ton of raving reviews already.

A beautifully crafted, open world awaits as you take on giant mechanical beasts and find answers as to what happened between man and machine. The only shame is that this gem is only available on Playstation and not any other platforms.

Release date: February 28, only on Playstation 4.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the big releases for the recent launch of the Nintendo Switch. An open world game set in the majestic land of Hyrule, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has stunned audiences with the amount of content and adventure the game offers. Many are excited to be able to utilize the Nintendo Switch’s new features with Breath of the Wild, like being able to play on the go in the Switch’s mobile mode.

It has shied away from the more linear storytelling style of previous Zelda games to give the player a true, open world experience. With tons of adventure awaiting in a gorgeous renovation of Hyrule, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is certainly a game many can’t wait to get their hands on.

Release date: March 3, on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands takes gamers back to the days of stealth-squad-strategy gameplay in the game’s first version of an open world game. Set in Bolivia, the Ghosts are to help a struggling rebellion fight back against the Santa Blanca drug cartel and the Bolivian government that has allowed the cartel to work free of punishment.

Players can use a very large variety of weaponry and different types of transportation to traverse the environment. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands can be played solo in its entirety with 3 AI squadmates or the player can invite up to three friends to play together.

Release date: March 7, on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.

Yooka-Laylee

Funded by a Kickstarter campaign, Yooka-Laylee is brought to us by Playtonic games. Made up of a lot of developers behind hits like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country, Yooka-Laylee brings a sense of nostalgia to the modern platform genre of games. Yooka-Laylee is based heavily on Banjo-Kazooie‘s style but comes into its own with a new open world full of adventure and new characters. Yooka (the lizard) and Laylee (the bat) are on a mission to stop the big bad Capitol B before he takes all the world’s books to make a profit.

Yooka-Laylee even introduces a new way to unlock different abilities through a snake character named, and yes this is real, Trowzer.  New modifiers can be added to change gameplay and the player has the ability to not just unlock new worlds, but to expand on current worlds to find new challenges as well. There is also a new co-op mode that allows another player to join and help battle enemies and challenges.

Release date: April 11, on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Not much is known about Red Dead Redemption 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption. However, it is supposed to release sometime in Fall of 2017. What you can most likely expect is another kick ass, open world western game. The trailer above mainly shows the environment in which the game will take place, which seems like a gorgeous upgrade from Rockstar’s previous game.

For background, the first Red Dead Redemption was about an outlaw named John Marston, who had to track down his former gang and bring them to justice to save his family. So if Red Dead Redemption 2 is anything like its predecessor, it rightfully deserves its spot on our Most Anticipated Games of 2017 list.

Release date: Fall 2017, on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and (maybe) PC.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey takes the Italian plumber on a new series of adventures through different worlds. A 3D sandbox style game that takes inspiration from classics Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Odyssey is expected to be one of the hits to drive sales of Nintendo’s new console, the Nintendo Switch.

New moves are introduced, such as being able to throw Mario’s hat and bounce on it to get across gaps as shown in the trailer, and new worlds are explored via airship travel. Many have been waiting for a new Mario adventure, and with the Nintendo Switch fans will be getting just that.

Release date: Holiday 2017, on Nintendo Switch.

Days Gone

Days Gone will be Sony’s attempt at an open world zombie game. You play as a bounty hunter named Deacon, a former Road Captain in an outlaw biker club who is trying to come to terms with how to live in a world plagued by such a crisis. It’s a story of survival, as the player rides through the world, searching for supplies, completing missions, and trying not to die.

The game’s enemies include different drifters, militia, and most importantly zombie-like creatures called Freakers. Different types of Freakers inhabit the game. Developers have taken full advantage of the Unreal Engine 4 and crafted a beautiful open world experience filled with hordes and all kinds of trouble.

Release date: To be determined 2017, on Playstation 4.

Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy

Crash is back! Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is bringing a remastered version of Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped to the Playstation 4 as a package deal. One of the main platform characters of Sony’s earliest consoles gets an updated look for a new generation.

Follow Crash’s adventures as he fights back against the evil Dr. Neo Cortex and his allies in all three games. Collect wumpas, battle all kinds of creatures, and most importantly, dance your little heart out.

Release date: June 30, on Playstation 4.

Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is a shared world, multiplayer pirate experience from Rare. Grab your friends and set sail on the high seas as you loot and plunder your way through your own adventure. Work as a crew to find buried treasures before other players have a chance to grab them.

There are certain quests you can seek out as well as mythical creatures to discover on land and in the sea. Open world games seem to be the main genre for many 2017 games, so hopefully Sea of Thieves delivers the multiplayer open world experience many have been craving.

Release date: To be determined 2017, on Xbox One and PC.

Assassin’s Creed Empire

*Supposedly leaked shot of the game, has not been officially confirmed to be real*

*Supposedly leaked shot of the game, has not been officially confirmed to be real*

Personally, my top choice of our list of Most Anticipated Games of 2017 would be Assassin’s Creed Empire. While not much is known about the upcoming game, other than rumors and supposed leaks that have been circulated around the internet, we do know that Ubisoft has been re-evaluating the franchise since the last two releases, Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, were pretty rough.

The team behind Assassin’s Creed IV have been tasked with the next entry in the series, which has fans pretty excited. Assassin’s Creed IV was well received by many, and after skipping a 2016 release to focus more on the series, fans hope it will be worth the wait.

The game, which the internet has code-named Assassin’s Creed Empire after rumored leaks confirmed that as the game’s working title, supposedly takes place in Ancient Egypt. This would be the furthest in history that an Assassin’s Creed game has taken place. The map is rumored to be three times the size of the Assassin’s Creed IV map, so if rumors are true, fans should expect a huge game ahead.

Release date: Expected Fall 2017, no official release date, on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.
