Anime Expo 2016 Holds Nothing Back for Their 25th Anniversary

anime expo

2016 marks the 25th anniversary of Anime Expo (AX) and the SPJA held nothing back for their attendees during the holiday weekend.

Anime Expo is hosted annually in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Convention Center and is organized by the non-profit Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA). The convention is usually held on the first weekend in July, which coincides with 4th of July, and lasts for four days. This year’s expo reached 100,420 people which is a 10% increase of attendees from 2015. Overall turnstile attendance for the four day weekend was marked at 304,799 which a 15% growth increase from last year. In other words, there were a lot of anime fans in Los Angeles for the holiday weekend.

Guests

The SPJA brought out some amazing guests for their anniversary. Some notable ones include:

  • Vampy Bit Me
A well-known cosplayer who’s passion for cosplay has helped her achieve much fame via her Instagram account @vampybitme. Her hard work and dedication even led her to be published in Playboy as part of their Social Media Stars section.
  • Tetsuya Kakihara
Despite growing up in Germany, Kakihara worked hard to perfect his Japanese and voice acting. His career began in 2003 and has become well-known for voicing characters with fiery personalities. He has voiced characters such as Natsu from Fairy Tail, Simon from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Toudou Shinpachi from Yowamushi Pedal.
  • momoMC
A world-famous Japanese artistic pole dancer, momoMc (pronounced “momo mac”) join Anime Expo by hosting a night cafe each night of the expo. She is the prestigious Grand Award Winner of the 2015 International Pole Theater Japan, Comedy category and Pole Battle Tokyo, SEXY category awards.

Exhibitors

With so many booths at Anime Expo, exhibitors have to work extra hard to draw in the crowds. Three exhibitors that stood out for me this year were the Flex ComicsJapanime Games, and the Good Smile Company booths. I have consistently bought something from Flex Comics at every convention I see them at because they have top quality apparel that combines both the fitness life and nerd life. Japanime Games stood out with their Naruto board game and even gave attendees a chance to try out it out. Good Smile Company displayed a product I have been waiting for a very long time to release, their One Punch Man figma. While the figma still does not have a release date, it was jaw dropping to finally see a live prototype.

Exclusives

Awkwardly enough, I did not find a lot of great exclusives this year at Anime Expo. This might be because I was only able to attend Anime Expo for one day and the exclusives I was aware of did not interest me.

Anime Expo 2016 is the best one I have been to so far. You can check out my top five favorite moments here. I do however have some peeves and you can check that our here. If you missed out on this year’s expo, early ticket sales for Anime Expo 2017 will begin early next year. Next year’s Anime Expo will include an extra preview day to showcase the exhibit hall for select guests. The regular event is scheduled for July 1 – July 4, 2017. Yes, five days of Anime Expo next year. It’s an amazing time to be an anime fan.

Anime Expo 2016
4.5

The Verdict

Anime Expo held nothing back to please the fans and it showed. Anime Expo brought out amazing guests, exhibitors, and exclusives to attract over 100,000 people for their 25th anniversary, the most Anime Expo attendees ever.
