An Early Look at The Valiant #1 (of 4)

GameStop, Inc.

THE-VALIANT_001_COVER_RIVERAKay McHenry is the newest Geomancer. She’s having a hard time wrapping her head around the concept, and Armstrong might not be the best person to provide explanations and introductions—but he’s there, all the same. Bloodshot is running an operation for MI-6, and being somewhat sarcastic and very violent about the process. Gilad Anni-Padda is remembering the deaths of three Geomancers and three civilizations, in the past. He is starting to fear that the same enemy that defeated him in the past is coming again, and he realizes that he will need help facing it.

The Valiant #1 is a perfect combination of action and character development. Jeff Lemire & Matt Kindt blend capture everyone’s personalities in brief sketches. They condense years (centuries, really) of the Eternal Warrior’s growth and change into a few pages, showing his progress from a cocky warrior sure he can defeat the enemy on his own to a wiser man who knows he needs back up—and who realizes even that might not be enough. Battles and conversations are intermingled, often happening at the same time.

Paolo Rivera captures a range of locations, moods, and peoples. He moves masterfully from prehistoric times to the present, from Armstrong’s quiet conversation with Kay to Bloodshot’s flat-out action. Each of the characters in the book is drawn as an individual. Rivera shows that, while Gilad and Bloodshot may both be athletic fighters, they have different body-types and patterns of movement. Each of the other protagonists is equally well drawn. The monster with its changing forms has a truly threatening appearance.

The Valiant is going to be Eternal Warrior series, and a great team series. And, as promised, Valiant is including brief introductions to the characters as they show up–without infodumping or turning anyone into a cabbage head for the duration. Fans of superheroes, character development, and action will enjoy this title. Recommended both to long time Valiant readers and to those who want to see what the fuss is all about.

The Valiant is coming out on December 10, 2014. Mark your calendar.
