When Alpha was released in theaters, I was a bit apprehensive in seeing another film about a boy and his dog. However, upon the upcoming Blu-ray release from Columbia Pictures, I decided to give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised.
Yes, some might call it an Ice Age version of White Fang, but really this is a family film about companionship, loyalty and true friendship.
In our story, Keda (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is separated from his tribe during a buffalo hunt and finds a wolf in a similar situation. The two forge a bond that essentially shows the domestication of dogs and their human counterparts.
Alpha is an absolutely stunning film. Even if you don’t find the story appealing, the natural lighting will be enough to sit through this picture…hey, you did it for The Revenant, you can do it for Alpha.
What I enjoyed most is that the film wasn’t in English, giving it a more authentic feel that seems to be lost in movie making these days. At times you forget that Smit-McPhee was the most recent Nightcrawler in the X-Men franchise and to see how diverse of an actor he is, is enough to give this film a watch.
Alpha comes home to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on Tuesday, November 13, 2018.
