Almost Love is romantic comedy about a group of friends figuring out love, life, and and all aspects of human interaction. The story follows Adam (Scott Evans),a guy stuck ghost painting for successful contemporary artist, Ravella Brewer (Patricia Clarkson). He and Marklin (Augustus Prew), who is very successful model/celebrity in his own right, are hitting the make-it-or-break-it point of their relationship where their looking down the barrel of a shotgun wondering, “Is this all life has to offer?” Their circle of friends fair no better as Elizabeth (Kate Walsh), Adam’s best buddy, is 15 years into her marriage and is ready to bounce when she finds out her husband’s cyber cheating with a younger woman.
Their other friend, Cammy (Michelle Buteau) is dating Henry (Colin Donnell), a homeless homebody and rounding out the misery-loves-company crew is Haley (Zoe Chao) who’s trying to figure out what her feelings for Scott James (Christopher Gray) really are.
So everyone’s a mess in this hour and a half Rom-Com-Drama that is full of very upscale, liberal arts graduates that are dealing with first world problems. Think Millennial Will & Grace…and just like Will & Grace, the tertiary characters are far more interesting than the two main players.
The Haley/Scott James relationship was totally uncomfortable and hangs on the edge of ephebophilia and thankfully don’t perform the sexual act, which I wish this plot was completely left out of the film. If it was reversed where a 17-year-old a month away from turning 18 was trying to seduce her tutor, it would have been considered criminal instead of humorous and that issue should be held by the same standard across the board.
The relationship between Cammy and Henry is the funniest part of the entire film and those weirdo peppers. Cammy has to ask herself, “What self-respecting person dates a homeless guy?” and the answer is, someone who doesn’t respect themselves. Buteau and Donnell almost always steal the show in whatever shows or movies they are in and that’s always saying something, especially with how talented of a cast is in Almost Love.
Almost Love drops on VOD today and if you love those ’90s style indie Rom-Com-Drama about people in the big city, then this is definitely your flick.
