He may be most well known as one half of the genre-bending virtual band, Gorillaz, alongside Blur‘s Damon Albarn, but Tank Girl was where he cut his teeth, and where he first gained fame. Since those days he’s kept busy creating album covers not only for Gorillaz, but for Mindless Self Indulgence as well, but has not produced major comic work in years. Well, after over 20 years Jamie Hewlett is making his much-requested return to the character he and Alan Martin made famous, first through Deadline magazine, and now through Titan Comics. Tank Girl became a sensation, launching comics, novels, magazines, even a Hollywood film, and revolutionized the comic industry in the UK. Titan has teamed with Martin and Hewlett to continue that revolution.
This June, Titan Comics will be releasing the Kickstarter funded hardcover 21st Century Tank Girl as a 3 issue mini series. Written by Martin, the series has a roster of fan favorite artists already attached, including Jim Mahfood, Phillip Bond, Brett Parson, Jonathan Edwards, Warwick Johnson Cadwell, Craig Knowles and more. The first issue will have two variant covers by Hewlett, his first comic work in 15 years, and his first Tank Girl work since 1996 (other than the dust jacket illustration from the hardcover that is being used as cover B).
Hopefully this means we’ll see a proper return to interiors as well. Issue one is in next month’s Previews, and in shops in June.
