ISSUE # 16
Deadpool XXX: An Axel Braun Parody
Mike sits down in front of the chromebook and proceeds to stare at the screen for a few moments as he considers HOW to start the intro to the Deadpool Porn Parody he painted himself into a corner do do several different ways. The first way was having a poll on twitter about what parody he would do next, Of them Deadpool was the popular choice with a record smashing THREE votes! It should be noted that one of those three votes was cast by the director of the film, Axel Braun, which pretty much gives extra fuel into the meta jokes that dictate the sensibilities of the comic, video game, mainstream and porn versions of Deadpool.
The second way was mentioning that he was going to be be reviewing Deadpool several times as a recurring joke in his PT2 PHOTO RECAP OF THE 2019 AVN AWARDS. Which was just linked in the previous sentence. Essentially the dye was cast then and there and he has to follow through.
Finally, Mike wouldn’t want to disappoint the half dozen or so people that have actually stumbled across this column because they were googling “Jessica Drake, Lady Deadpool” or wanted to click on that “Taco Bell/X-Box One” PR that’s been hanging around the Fanboy mainpage for months now and stuck around to read it. The only problem is HOW does Mike want to kick off the review AND find a recurring theme/gag to lace through the text?
Mike’s at a loss and decides to put it off by playing Fortnite for just one game.
In the sixth game of Fortnite, just after Mike landed in Loot Lake and just before he got shot in the head by what was probably a seven year old hopped up on Totino’s pizza rolls and mountain dew, Mike figured out how to approach the review. Then lost it in anger as a avatar dressed as a burger mascot did “the floss” and teabagged my corpse.
Mike tries again, after lunch. Usually he opens the column with a gimmicky recap of what the column is about and how it works; he reviews the parody not on the olympic levels of sexual acts but how well the parody does in honoring the source material. He bags on the paradigm of tube sites, encourages the readers to pay for their spank material and tries to work in his Fapdollar™ joke somewhere before getting to the meat of the review. He also promises dick jokes but makes very few considering.
Then he winds up having to go to the bathroom.
A solid bowel movement and three duels in Yu-Gi-OH Duel links later Mike decides to just jump right into the review and hope that some idea maybe even a slight meta joke will come to him for the intro.
Breaking the “fourth wall” is a classic entertainment shtick. It’s been around at least since Shakespeare and almost always used for comedy; Laurel And Hardy, The Marx Brothers, Ferris Buller, etc have all looked out to the audience, acknowledging their part in the shenanigans, and reminded us that we’re in on the joke. In-jokes are also old hat; the name of a character could make a select few chuckle a tad more than those not in the know like Harrison Ford’s character in “Apocalypse Now” being named “Colonel Lucas” or that “Inception” is a thinly veiled metaphor for movie making. Depending on your sensibilities meta-fourth wall breaking humor can be tiresome or clever. In-jokes better work as regular jokes or else it becomes Marville. Deadpool as a character works both of these angels in just about every format he’s been in. He knows he’s a comic book character and even if he wasn’t the first to do so it’s a trope that defines him. There are plenty of in-jokes with Deadpool also but most work as regular jokes; you don’t HAVE to have seen “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (in fact, it’s best if you haven’t) to laugh at Deadpool repeatedly shooting that movie’s version of himself but there is a bonus amount of satisfaction in the joke if you did.
So it stands to reason that any parody of Deadpool would have to incorporate meta-jokes and in-jokes into the text of the material. If not, could it be said that the creators of the parody truly understand what makes Deadpool tick? An even more specific question is: can these narrative tricks work in the context of people fucking in front of the camera?
The answer is a resounding “Yes!”
The part about the narrative tricks and fucking is a “yes”, the part about not doing meta and in-jokes is “no” but fortunately there are plenty of those type of jokes in “Deadpool XXX”. Sorry I set myself up for a contradictory problem there. Onwards!
Deadpool (Seth Gamble in an award winning role) is finally getting his own porn parody and because he’s maximum effort it is being directed by Axel Braun! Needless to say Deadpool is excited about this because he’s going to get laid! He first encounters Movie Domino (Ana Fox) and when he makes a comment about the comic fans getting upset that they used the movie Domino the Comic Book Domino (Jennifer White) shows up. Deadpool’s dreams of becoming the meat in a Domino sandwich are dashed when he’s blocked by the ‘fifth wall”. After the all girl, all Domino scene Axel calls “cut” and the award winning director gets his meta cameo in his own movie. Also as an in-joke Deadpool’s agent is played by James Bartholet; a character actor best known in the industry for his non-sex roles, in a non sex role.
What follows is what would happen if there was a Deadpool comic about Deadpool trying to do a porn parody; a multiple take gag with Deadpool as a pizza delivery guy, things go comically wrong and Axel Braun hands the porn parody directing duties to another director! That is a funny gag in of itself but if you know who the replacement director is, Will Ryder (Grease XXX, Not the Bradys XXX, Not the Wizard of Oz XXX, etc) who basically started the porn parody genre as it is today.
Other things that you could imagine happening to the Merc with a mouth in his own personal porn problems: Trying to get in a three way with Electra (Romi Rain) and the Punisher (some Russian dude) getting decapitated and having to watch them get it on without the ability or body to ”enjoy” it.
Shooting his agent in the head because he likes the prequel trilogy.
Meeting Lady Deadpool and finding out she’s been fucking Wolverine (Tommy Gunn)!
Ultimately the big running joke in the Deadpool porn parody is aptly very Deadpool; he can’t get laid in his own porno!
This reaches a climax (get it) when Cable (Brad Armstrong) appears from the future and tells ‘pool that his porn parody will destroy the world! This is the best in-joke of all because Brad Armstrong is, for all intents and purposes, Axel’s greatest rival in the industry; the two directors command the biggest (relative to the porn industry) budgets and are frequently head to head in all the award categories. It doesn’t hurt that Armstrong bears an uncanny (get it) resemblance to the time traveling bad-ass or has a fitting growl either.
Axel also saves the best porn meta-joke for last: Deadpool asks for a fluffer. A fluffer, if you don’t know, is someone whose job was to keep the male talent hard between lighting setups. The position has almost a urban myth atmosphere about it. The fluffer (Nikki Delano) appears and the merc with a mouth finally gets his sex scene!
Braun and company get Deadpool. The character’s specific blend of raunchy humor and full-tilt wackiness lend themselves marvelously (see what I did there) to Adult entertainment. The result is one of Axel Braun’s best superhero porn parodies since Spiderman or Batman 66. Gamble is spot on with the snark and mayhem that makes ‘Pool what he is. His physicality is never less than perfect communicating humor and warped grace through a heavy pouch covered costume. Everyone looks great! The level of detail is always a strong selling point in Braun’s parodies and Deadpool XXX is no exception. Armstrong get a costuming credit too which doesn’t surprise if you know he designs Jessica Drake’s dress each year for the AVN Awards. Here was his creation this year:
In addition to being a great, fun parody the sex scenes are super hot ,well shot and lit. A special shout out the Jessica Drake who is sex personified even with her Lady Deadpool mask only half off. There really isn’t a misstep in the entire project. The ending even gets in a different type of meta/in joke but you’ll have to see it to find out.
“Deadpool XXX: An Axel Braun porn parody” walked away with the AVN Award for best Parody. It’s no big surprise that; Axel usually takes the statue in that category. This time though Axel earns it not just through sheer bludgeoning production value but by really paying a funny, understanding homage to a comic character.
It’s well worth your Fapdollar(™)
STUFF TANGENTIAL TO THE COLUMN THAT I COULDN”T WORK IN ORGANICALLY
That Taco Bell/X-Box One PR has been around for going on five months, so has the Long Shot: Homecoming PR and the “Mound over Hell” interview. Someone check to see if these guys are locked in their walk in freezers please!
Guess I never came up with a opening gimmick… or did I?
In-jokes can be tedious if there isn’t a solid joke tied to them. Like the joke about the months old PRs isn’t really funny till the walk in freezer bit.
Well maybe it’s a little funny before.
The “trapped in the walk in freezer” bit is a staple of 70’s and 80’s sitcoms. Usually it was used to put two characters that hate each other together and/or be the framing device for a clip show episode.
Another great in-joke was in the “Kids in the hall: Brain candy” movie. Big Pharma president Don Roaritor, played by Mark McKinney, is a direct imitation of KitH and SNL producer Lorne Michaels.
Other comic book characters that know they are comic book characters: Howard the Duck, King Mob (Invisibles), Animal Man and She-Hulk.
If there is ever a She Hulk TV show or movie I wonder if they’ll ever work that aspect of the character in.
Tommy Gunn has played Wolverine in several porn parodies even in ones not directed by Axel Braun. He’s even been Wolverine in a different Deadpool porn parody!
That particular porn parody is “This can’t be Deadpool XXX + X” directed by Ralph Long.
That one sucks!
It did win for best parody that year, though, which makes Deadpool the only character from two different directors to win the same award.
Fluffers did exist but since the advent of viagra and other dick hardening breakthroughs they’ve faded into myth.
Just to see if you won in your office pool: Deadpool won Best Actor in a feature, Best Parody, Best Makeup and Best Art Direction.
Yes AVN gives awards for Art Direction!
Braun also cleaned up this year at the AVNs for “The Possession of Mrs. Hyde” which got “Best Director – Feature”, Best Action/thriller, Best Screenplay and Movie of the year
Sadly, despite my enthusiastic vote “Balls destroyed 2: Electric boogaloo” didn’t win for best BDSM title.
