Voice Actors Awhimai Fraser and Hualalai Chung of Matangi and Moni Talk ‘Moana’ 2 Now on Disney+.
Editor’s Note: I mistakenly referred to Hualalai Chung as Samoan when he is in fact Hawaiian.
I had the incredible opportunity to sit down for an interview with Awhimai Fraser and Hualalai Chung, who voice the beloved characters Matangi and Moni in ‘Moana 2‘ now on Disney+. Prior to the interview, we were lucky enough to meet Fraser’s husband, who was full of energy and shared in the lighthearted moment when we teased the idea of doing the Maori Haka in the hallway. It was a fun way to kick off what would be an unforgettable conversation about the making of ‘Moana 2‘.
The atmosphere at Disney Animation in Burbank, CA was electric, especially as we were treated to a stunning performance by Fraser, who was accompanied by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear on the piano. Their music, paired with the excitement of meeting the talented cast, set the tone for a day full of creativity and storytelling.
During our chat, we learned that in ‘Moana 2‘ our characters embark on an expansive new voyage, joined by a diverse crew of unlikely seafarers. The story takes a thrilling turn when Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, propelling her into uncharted and dangerous waters that promise an adventure unlike any she’s ever encountered. It’s a captivating premise that will surely keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, with production by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, ‘Moana 2‘ brings back the magic that fans of the first film fell in love with. The soundtrack is once again a key element, featuring music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. With such a talented team behind both the music and animation, ‘Moana 2‘ promises to be a true cinematic treasure.
Moana 2‘ is now streaming on Disney+, bringing Moana and Maui’s newest adventure straight to your home, along with a soundtrack transporting you to the heart of Oceania.
