Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear Talks Song Writing for the Polynesian inspired animated feature ‘Moana 2‘ Now on Disney+.
‘Moana 2‘, the highly anticipated sequel to Disney’s beloved ‘Moana‘, arrived on Disney+ on March 12, 2025. I had the opportunity to sit down with Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the masterminds behind the film’s unforgettable soundtrack, during our visit to Disney Animation in Burbank, CA.
The sequel to the Walt Disney Animation Studios fan-favorite has already made waves, earning its place as the #3 highest-grossing film of 2024 and crossing a billion dollars at the global box office. It’s only the fourth WDAS film to reach this milestone, joining the ranks of ‘Frozen‘, ‘Zootopia‘, and ‘Frozen 2‘.
It’s the music in ‘Moana 2‘ that truly sets the stage for an emotional, musical journey, with the dynamic duo of Barlow and Bear lending their talent to the film’s soundtrack, just like the Sherman Bros. did in their younger years. The pair, both accomplished in their own right, bring an infectious energy to the project, weaving together a soundtrack that promises to be just as memorable as the first film.
During our conversation with Barlow and Bear, shared what it was like to work on the sequel to one of Disney’s most beloved films after having accompanied Awhimai Fraser on the piano, earlier in the afternoon.
‘Moana 2‘ picks up three years after the original film, following Moana and Maui as they embark on a new adventure. Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, prompting her to set sail into the far seas of Oceania. This new voyage is unlike anything she has faced before, filled with dangers, ancient mysteries, and new friendships.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, the film brings together a team of creatives who have poured their hearts into crafting a fresh yet nostalgic continuation of Moana’s story. The movie features a star-studded musical lineup, with Barlow and Bear’s contributions serving as the emotional heartbeat of the film.
The music in ‘Moana 2‘ plays a pivotal role in the film’s storytelling complimenting the visual innovations created by the filmmakers.
‘Moana 2‘ is now streaming on Disney+, bringing Moana and Maui’s newest adventure straight to your home, along with a soundtrack transporting you to the heart of Oceania.
