Kaoru Mori’s historical romance manga A Bride’s Story is already established as a well developed, intriguing story with gorgeous detailed art. Volumes three and four step away from the main character Amir’s story to that of twin sisters Leila and Leyli. The sisters are enraptured with the idea of being brides and are desperate to find husbands for themselves. Their crazy antics drives their parents insane, but they grant their daughters’ wish. Leyli and Leila become engaged to two brothers they’ve known since childhood. At first, the girls are unhappy with their ordinary match, but when the approaches they come to understand their husbands-to-be are good and loyal men.
A Bride’s Story takes place during the nineteenth century in Central Asia. This region is associated with poor treatment of women. Mori paints a different picture. Her female characters are treated as important members of society. The importance of their domestic and hunting skills aren’t only necessary to maintaining a household, but continuing a proud tradition.
Leyli and Leila defy that tradition a little, when they strike out to find their own husbands. They’re young, energetic, and mischievous and their desire to get married is annoying, especially from a modern perspective. If you look at it from their eyes, though, it was the high point of a young girl’s life. The twins are eager to grow up and be revered as brides. Their antics are humorous as they search for husbands and anticipation before the wedding. A sense of realism peeks in too, when the girls realize they’re leaving their parents and experience hesitance about being tied to childhood rivals for the rest of their lives.
Mori’s art is always praiseworthy. She has an understanding of the female form that idealizes any shape and size. Her attention to details adds a lifelike quality to every page. It’s not uncommon to get swallowed up for several minutes studying it.
A Bride’s Story is another fine example of Kaoru Mori’s work , which is always guaranteed to be entertaining.
