Arrow holds nothing back on Unchained by bringing back Nyssa Al Ghul, Roy Harper, Shado, and by giving us an unexpected guest appearance. Spoilers ahead!

It’s finally time for Nyssa to overtake Malcolm Merlyn and she holds nothing back during her amazing escape scene. Nyssa’s quest to bring down Malcolm introduces us to Tatsu Yamashiro, aka Katana. If the name sounds familiar, it is because she is one of the characters in the upcoming DC movie, Suicide Squad. I should mention that the DC Television Universe has no connection with the DC Cinematic Universe. DC is making some smart moves by putting Katana in the episode to promote Suicide Squad and making it work with the Arrow plot line. It’s possible Deadshot might even make a return since even the dead can still make guest appearances on Arrow.

Felicity Smoak is trying to return to her everyday life and her struggle is inspirational for paraplegics everywhere. It hurts to see one of the most brilliant minds on Arrow and the best hacker (according to Barry Allen and Caitlin Snow on yesterday’s episode of The Flash) struggle to navigate her way around a room, yet she stays strong and even makes a quick, witty joke. Felicity’s strength shines at the end of the episode and is an inspiration for paraplegics to not let their disability hold them back.

Roy is back in Star City and has returned back to his old ways. Fortunately, we discover he is in fact under the control of the villain, “Calculator,” who turns out to be Felicity’s father. With Roy’s return, for the first time in a long time we get all three of our favorite bow-and-arrow users again in one episode. Roy and Thea rekindle their love in a heartwarming moment at the end of the episode, but as we’ve seen with many of the romantic relationships in Arrow, happily ever after doesn’t last forever.

If Nyssa and Roy returning and Katana’s guest appearance was not enough for you, Shado returns in Oliver Queen’s flashbacks on the island. The last time we saw Shado was during season two when Oliver was facing off against Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke. While she was only a hallucination, we get a better idea of how Oliver developed the resolve to save Star City. It still bothers me that they didn’t explain how Oliver escaped his torturing.

Unchained was a great episode with more drama and twists than we have seen in a long time. We have two unexpected characters make a guest appearance on the episode (Shado and Katana), two returning characters (Nyssa and Roy), the Calculator turns out to be Felicity’s dad,, and Oliver has a chance to save Thea, but has to kill Malcolm. Unchained was a great setup to next week’s Sins of the Father and brings back the suspense in Arrow that I haven’t felt since the Deathstroke arc.

4.5

Summary

Nyssa steals the show and teases us with her fight against Katana. Great setup for the next episode.
