Once again, we present a work by the Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis. While his films don’t exactly have the best cinematic form, they have the unwavering dedication to being weird. The Wizard of Gore is no different. Montag the Magnificent is unlike any other magician seen before. His onstage illusions result in real deaths. Multiple volunteers are dissected in various ways, always making sure to present the camera with another piece of butcher shop gore. The film was remade in 2007 with Crispin Glover as Montag. Like so many remakes of beloved oddities, I’ve never seen it.
