Now it’s up to the warrior princess of the DC world to save their stumbling cinematic universe. Batman battling Superman didn’t get it done, nor did assembling a ragtag group of supervillains to become a team of anti-heroes. We got an introduction to Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman, and she took the spotlight away from everybody. Now Gadot is headlining her own movie directed by Patty Jenkins, and the latest trailer for Wonder Woman has just debuted.
While it’s impossible to deny that Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad made money, I still can’t shake this feeling that Wonder Woman is the make or break movie of the DC Extended Universe. Sure, these movies still have a fanbase that will fiercely defend the movies, but their inability to catch on beyond that fanatic circle is something that DC will have to overcome if this expanding universe is to keep going. Wonder Woman offers the best chance of that, with Gadot starring alongside Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen.
Taking the Amazonian princess out of Themyscria and into the action of World War I is an inspired choice which is likely to free the story from having to be burdened by larger franchise connections. We’ll know how Wonder Woman will affect the greater DCEU when it opens in theaters on June 2nd, 2016.
