Hot off its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Spike Lee‘s latest joint BlacKkKlansman unleashed its first trailer ahead of its release on August 10, 2018 from Focus Features. BlacKkKlansman sees the legendary filmmaker teaming up with Get Out producer Jordan Peele to tell the incredible true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) and how he infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the ’70s. Starring opposite John David Washington is Adam Driver, who continues his impressive streak of working with some of the greatest living directors. Topher Grace co-stars as David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK.
Since it was first announced, BlacKkKlansman has been among the top of my most anticipated movies of 2018. Spike Lee has never been one to shy away from controversial topics and I’m sure he’ll use the past to inform the present, as evidenced by the use of “America First” in this trailer. BlacKkKlansman is Lee’s first feature film since 2015’s blistering masterwork Chi-raq, which is still streaming on Amazon Prime and was quite prescient in examining the cultural moment before the ascent of Donald Trump.
BlacKkKlansman opens in theaters on August 10, 2018.
The official synopsis for BlacKkKlansman:
From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out
