The Spectacular Now is a film about Sutter Keely (Miles Teller), a smart, charming, alcoholic, high school senior who just skates by in life. He lacks focus, direction and only cares about living in the moment. He has a job at the local haberdashery, and a life of leisure without a care in the world. All that changes when his girlfriend, Cassidy (Brie Larson) dumps him as she wants more out of life than living in their small southern town. The next morning, Sutter is woken up by Aimee (Shailene Woodley), the cute, sweet, innocent honor student and his life is changed forever.
This film is a very simple story about how one event can change the direction of your life forever, and someone whom you have never noticed before makes you want to be a better person. A tad melancholy, The Spectacular Now is a typical arthouse film, especially with its ending. However, the cast make the film worth watching. Teller and Woodley’s chemistry on screening is phenomenal. The characters are believable and their situations are grounded in reality.
If you want to see actual acting and a heartfelt story this summer, The Spectacular Now is your movie. There was not a single bad performance in this film, no matter how small the role. Made on a budget for $2.5 million, used every penny to tell their story. The cast and crew should be proud of their final product.
The Spectacular Now opens in New York and Los Angeles, August 2, expanded release August 9, and nationwide August 23, 2013.
