He’s coming. The unstoppable killing machine that first appeared in the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic more than 30 years ago returns in The Predator from director Shane Black. After a few delays and a bit of secrecy, we’ve finally been graced with the first teaser for the Iron Man 3 director’s highly anticipated action/sci-fi sequel which hopes to match the intensity of John McTiernan’s 1987 original.
Shane Black co-wrote The Predator with his longtime friend and collaborator Fred Dekker, the two having worked together on the cult classic The Monster Squad. Black also has a familiarity with the alien killing machine having been one of the victims in the first Predator as Hawkins – he was hired so he could perform rewrites on the set.
This first teaser for The Predator hints at a collision between an elite team of assassins and the eponymous murderous alien within a small suburban community, and breaking from typical Shane Black tradition the film is set during Halloween and not Christmas. Somewhere along the way genetic modification plays a factor in this upcoming Predator revival, but how it exactly factors in is rather vague in this first glimpse of the film. While the teaser itself might seem a bit generic due to the amount of information it’s withholding, it’s important to remember that this is a Shane Black movie, so it’ll be brimming with witty dialogue and major surprises. If there’s anybody in this world who can possibly make the first great Predator sequel, it’s Shane Black.
Black has assembled an all-star cast for this revival of the Predator series with Olivia Munn, Jacob Tremblay, Sterling K. Brown, Keegan-Michael Key, and Trevante Rhodes headlining the action. We’ll know which of the hunted make it out to the other end when The Predator is unleashed into theaters on September 14, 2018.
The official synopsis for The Predator:
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
