The Latest ‘Venom’ Trailer Hints at an Ultraviolent Anti-Hero

Venom Trailer 2

“The world has enough superheroes,” proclaims the latest trailer for Ruben Fleischer‘s upcoming superhero movie Venom, so take that proclamation with a grain of salt. Tom Hardy takes on the symbiote suit of one of Spider-Man’s most famous foes, though this time Eddie Brock is an anti-hero headlining his own movie. While Sony struck a deal with Marvel to pull Spidey into the MCU, the characters on the fringes of Spider-Man’s world remain in the hands of Sony and they’re hoping Venom kicks off an expanded Spider-Verse that will allow them to cash in on the decades long superhero craze at the cinema.

Venom first appeared on the screen in the wildly uneven Spider-Man 3. Rewatching the film today, it’s obvious that Sam Raimi had no interest in the character and was forced to shoehorn Peter Parker’s darker rival into the sequel. Now with his own standalone film, Venom looks to be a darker, more violent vision with the director and star indicating that the film will most certainly be rated R. This second trailer for the film definitely suggests that Venom will be the most violent Spider-Man film to date, concluding with a tease that the anti-hero is pretty much going to be eating the heads of his enemies. Is that what heroes do?

We’ve now seen two trailer for Venom and I’m not entirely sold on the film, not that I wasn’t highly skeptical about its prospects beforehand. I think it’s really funny that the film is set in San Francisco yet that doesn’t stop Tom Hardy from laying on an incredibly thick Brooklyn accent. I guess an ultraviolent anti-hero isn’t the easiest sell. Tom Hardy will co-star alongside Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson. The screenplay for Venom is credited to Kelly Marcel, Will Beall, Scott Rosenberg, and Jeff Pinker. Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is directing Venom, which will be unleashed into theaters on October 5, 2018 from Sony Pictures.

The official logline for Venom:

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award-nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.
