Disney continues its lucrative plan of creating live action remakes of their animated classics with a few adaptations landing in theaters in 2019. Dumbo, The Lion King, and the sequel to Maleficent are all slated to debut this year, as well as director Guy Ritchie‘s live action adaptation of the 1992 animated classic Aladdin. We’ve had a few glimpses of Ritchie’s Aladdin but today brings us the first full length trailer for the film which hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
Aladdin is headlined by Will Smith as the Genie, a role made famous by the late great Robin Williams. Also starring in the film are Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine. Filling the role of the nefarious villain Jafar is Marwan Kenzari. Rounding out the cast are Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen. Ritchie will directing a script he co-wrote with veteran screenwriter John August.
This trailer is a slight improvement on the earlier glimpses of Aladdin, many of which have been roasted on the internet. While Disney has enjoyed massive success by retooling their vast catalog of classics, Aladdin is one that seems like it’s on a shaky foundation as far as public anticipation is concerned (something that the upcoming version of The Lion King doesn’t have to contend with). Will Smith has massive shoes to fill as Williams’ take on the Genie was a part of countless childhoods and has come to define the character.
We’ll see how critics and audiences greet Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin when Walt Disney Studios unveil the live action adaptation in theaters on May 24, 2019.
