This week we were all saddened to learn of the passing of Leonard Nimoy. The outpouring of sentiments from all sorts of people illustrated just how much Star Trek touched the lives of so many people. To honor the legacy of Leonard Nimoy, our friends at The Frida Cinema, Orange County’s only independent repertory theater, have staged a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan this Thursday, March 5th at 8:00 PM. Having never seen the finest Star Trek movie on the big screen, I’m excited and have already secured my ticket.
With the number of art house cinemas rapidly dwindling, it is important for film lovers to support the theaters that provide unique programming, and The Frida Cinema does just that. Even if you don’t make it to The Wrath of Khan, they have a number of other great movies coming up in the near future, including classics by David Lynch – Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Eraserhead – and, a personal favorite, John Waters’ Cry-Baby. They also have a presentation by Everything is Terrible, collectors of all kinds of filmed madness, on March 20th, which should not be missed.
With a theater like The Frida in Orange County, we have no room for complaints about theaters not providing daring cinema. I hope to see you there for The Wrath of Khan and many other showings. Support independent cinema.
