You don’t have to go far back into the FanboyNation archives to know that I’m a big fan of John Carpenter. So it’s just fortuitous timing that it was just announced that Rialto Pictures have undertaken an extensive 4K restoration of Carpenter’s classic The Fog. For the most part, Rialto Pictures have restored classic foreign and art films, so it’s fun that they’re using their vast array of tools to bring one of genre’s wildest films back to the big screen in all of its 4K glory, the restoration of which was overseen by Carpenter’s longtime collaborator, cinematographer Dean Cundey.
The Fog will open on October 26, 2018 at the Metrograph in New York City, the Music Box Theater in Chicago, and our friends at the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles. The restoration will play more dates at Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the country, so you might just have to wait a couple of weeks before the horrors hidden within The Fog come to your doorstep. Whether or not this new 4K restoration means that there will be a new Blu-ray of Carpenter’s classic remains to be seen, but The Fog is currently available on Blu-ray from the dedicated lovers of John Carpenter over at Scream Factory.
For those unaware, The Fog takes place in a quiet costal town in California. But the cozy little town on the shore has a dark secret that comes to the mainland when the fog arrives, bringing with it mysterious horrors. Frequent Carpenter collaborators appear in The Fog, including Adrianne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Tom Adkins as well as screen legends Janet Leigh and Hal Holbrook. Carpenter co-wrote the film with producer and another frequent collaborator Debra Hill and was shot by the aforementioned Cundey.
The return of The Fog to theaters in a new 4K restoration is exciting news and a blessing for the many fans of John Carpenter eager to revisit his many classics on the big screen. Keep an eye open around you because The Fog might be rolling in sooner than you think.
