Supergirl and the Kryptonian Werewolf?

GameStop, Inc.

Supergirl Rebirth 1Title: Supergirl Rebirth #1

Writer: Steve Orlando

Artist: Emanuela Lupacchino

Inker: Ray McCarthy

Colorist: Michael Atiyeh

Publisher: DC Comics

Release Date: August 17, 2016

Supergirl is one of those loveable DC characters that can stand on her own. She’s a little goofy at times, but what teenager isn’t? However, when you have Superman facing the Eradicator this week and she’s taking on a Kryptonian werewolf, an eyebrow has to be raised in confusion.

The carry over from New 52 is that Supergirl had lost her powers so thanks to the D.E.O., Cameron Chase and her foster parents, the Danvers rocket her off to the sun to retrofit the regeneration matrix in order to restore her powers. So far so good, right? Well, the problem is that back on Argo City, before it was destroyed, her biological father Zor-El had sent a man named Lar-On to the Phantom Zone because he was infected with the red kryptonite sickness, becoming a danger to the survivors of Krypton.

The process in sending Supergirl to the sun created a rift, opening up the Phantom Zone and expelling Lar-On from his quarantine and by the moonlight is transformed into a Kryptonian werewolf, reeking havoc on the D.E.O., who are no angels because they shoot before asking questions.

Emanuela Lupacchino and Ray McCarthy’s art is absolutely beautiful. The redesigned costume that is closer to the television series instead of the over sexualized version of the New 52 is a better fit, not because it’s more modest, but it’s more realistic. Why would Superman have a full jump suit, but Supergirl would fly around in just a singlet and thigh-highs?

Supergirl is Supergirl, she always bounces back and will be better than her previous version. The initial Rebirth issues have seemed like filler spots between the New 52 and the latest incarnation, let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo with the monster of the week.

Supergirl
  • 4.5/10
    Story - 4.5/10
  • 9/10
    Art - 9/10
6.8/10

The Verdict

Supergirl has always been more lighthearted than Superman, but when Kal-El is taking on the Eradicator and Supergirl fights a werewolf, eyebrows are raised.
