I don’t think any filmmaker of recent memory has had a more interesting career than David Gordon Green. At first, he started out as an indie darling with his film George Washington. Then the director took an unexpected left turn, and helmed a number of raunchy comedies that seemed to run counter to his previous works, such as Pineapple Express and his work on Eastbound & Down. Recently, it seems as if David Gordon Green is trying to find that balance between his more heartfelt and insightful work and his wild comedies.
Before David Gordon Green tackles the new take on Halloween, the acclaimed filmmaker will bring Stronger to theaters this fall. The story of Jeff Bauman, who was wounded in the Boston Marathon Bombing of 2013, will be brought to life with Jake Gyllenhaal stepping into the role of Bauman. He will co-star alongside Tatiana Maslany, playing his ex-girlfriend Erin.
Now Roadside Attractions has unveiled the first trailer for Stronger, which promises the gentle, heartfelt side of David Gordon Green’s wildly diverse styles of filmmaking. I think it’s safe to assume that Strong won’t feature the rah-rah enthusiasm for retribution against the attackers that was featured in Peter Berg‘s Patriots Day last year.
That kinder, gentler work of David Gordon Green will land in theaters on September 22, 2017 when Stronger lands in theaters nationwide.
The official synopsis for Stronger:
Stronger is the inspiring true story of Jeff Bauman, an ordinary man who captured the hearts of his city and the world to become the symbol of hope following the infamous 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Jeff, a 27-year-old, working-class Boston man who was at the marathon to try and win back his ex-girlfriend Erin (Tatiana Maslany). Waiting for her at the finish line when the blast occurs, he loses both his legs in the attack. After regaining consciousness in the hospital, Jeff is able to help law enforcement identify one of the bombers, but his own battle has just begun. He tackles months of physical and emotional rehabilitation with the unwavering support of Erin and his family. It is Jeff’s deeply personal account of the heroic journey that tests a family’s bond, defines a community’s pride and inspires his inner courage to overcome devastating adversity.
