Say his name. Shazam! In what looks to be a superhero movie that aims to break the mold of superhero origin stories, Lights Out director David F. Sandberg steps behind the camera and brings the legendary comic hero to the big screen with Shazam! Zachary Levi stars the eponymous hero who only takes on the form of the muscular superhero after orphan Billy Baston (Asher Angel) is chosen by a mystical force to take on the mantle of Shazam. As Billy’s youthful cohort is It‘s Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman (who is not to be confused with the first baseman of the Atlanta Braves).
The teaser that debuted at Comic-Con is extremely light on the plot of the film, focusing more on establishing the scenario that leads a young boy into a stunning transformation into a superhero. We’re only given the slightest glimpse of the film’s nefarious villian, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), and no sense as to the conflict that the eponymous superhero will encounter in his debut feature film. Rounding out the cast of Shazam! are Djimon Hounsou, Adam Brody, and Michelle Borth.
You can keep saying “Shazam!” until you’re blue in the face because this superhero won’t appear when you call his name until Warner Brothers debuts Shazam! into theaters nationwide on April 9, 2019.
The official synopsis for Shazam!:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
