It was announced earlier in the year that Kwanza Osajyefo, Tim Smith 3, Jamal Igle, and Khary Randolph’s fantastic Black had been optioned for film, but now we can follow-up with a director. The Breaks co-creator Seith Mann and Studio 8 will be adapting the Black Mask Studios title with a look to creating a franchise.
Black follows Kareem Jenkins as he develops superpowers after surviving a police shooting. He joins an underground group of other powered heroes in a world where only black people have abilities, and uses his powers to right wrongs and enact change to better the lives of African-American people, powered or not. The politically charged socially conscious series was originally a successful Kickstarter project before being picked up by Black Mask and continued with Black [AF] and Black [AF]: America’s Sweetheart.
Described as X-Men meets The Wire, Black will be produced by Studio 8 with a production deal through Sony.
