Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition Review

It’s like having spark notes for the Pokemon series after the Orange Islands – Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition Review

Prima Pokemon Visual CompanionPrima Pokemon Visual Companion Second Edition

Authors: Simcha Whitehill, Lawrence Neves, Katherine Fang, and Cris Silvestri

Publisher: DK/Prima Games

Release Date: 11/15/2016

Picture this, it’s the late 90’s. Kids WB has replaying Dragon Ball Z up until Goku defeats Recoom for about 2 or 3 years. Reboots and Beast Wars are over, Fox has been screwing around with the airing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Next Mutation, and none of the original Power Rangers are part of the cast and Alpha 6 is some whack annoying hip hop voiced droid now. That’s when Pokemon hits the scene and captures our hearts and our parents hard earned money. What choice does a young child have but to become the very best like no one ever was? Also the cartoon the Pokemon cartoon was playing DAILY. So I would go home, watch the show and do homework, go play the card game and video game via link cable with my friends, then repeat. It was a much simpler time. Around the time they began releasing more than the 151 Pokemon, in the game and the show, a magical time in my life began and I lost interest in the show as I kept pursuing other interests that were only interested in me as a friend. Now I’m older, wiser, and thanks to Pokemon Go nostalgic. Thank’s to the Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition I can relive and enjoy the nostalgia of the Pokemon cartoon without having to binge watch it.

The Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition is a small encyclopedia-sized volume Pokemon Spark Notes. It has everything about the Pokemon series and world broken down into digestible pieces of information to fill you heard up with plenty of information for Pokemon trivia. The Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition is broken into eight sections:

1. The World of Pokemon

2. Kanto

3. Orange Islands

4. Johto

5. Hoenn

6. Sinnoh

7. Unova

8. Kalos

Basically an overview then the big regions Ash has ventured through. Each region comes fully stacked with the major characters, full pokedex, and major milestones and landmarks that occur. Some are even from outside of Ash’s adventures. Each region also shares the greatest life lessons taught. It really is like a shortcut to watching the show, you get the cool stuff without having to watch the show run through its formula. Not that it’s a bad formula, but sometimes you just want to meat without the vegetables.

The Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition is nearly perfect. It is beautifully filled with art straight from the series, it is well put together, and the information is perfectly digestible. BUT… I found an error and it drops the overall score quite a bit. In the part where it shows all of Ash’s Pokemon. It says He caught his Pidgeotto as a Pidgey. Ash did not catch a Pidgey! He caught a Pidgeotto in Veridian Forest! It later evolved into Pidgeot to defeat the Spearow and save the Pidgey and Pidgeottos, then Ash released Pidgeot so it could look after them. This mistake is extremely disheartening, so I’m taking off a full point for the error and a half point because I can’t verify any information after the Orange Islands.

Prima Pokemon Visual Companion

Aside from that, the Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition is an amazing piece of fandom perfect for Pokemon fans of any age. If you only like the first 151, it works, you can use the information here to help you understand and find Pokemon in Pokemon Go or just enjoy some nostalgia. If you followed the franchise beyond that, which most did, then you have generations of Pokemon to enjoy. It is a great addition to any Pokemon collection, and a great source of information for anything Pokemon related. I give the Prima Pokemon Visual Companion 2nd Edition a 3.5/5.
