PREDATOR VS. JUDGE DREDD VS. ALIENS #1 : Threes Company
Writer: John Layman
Artist: Chris Mooneyham
The ultimate science-fiction crossover pits the legendary lawman Judge Dredd against the universe’s supreme hunters, the Predators. They both try to survive an onslaught by the galaxy’s ultimate killing machines, the Aliens!
Predator Vs. Judge Dredd Vs. Aliens #1 is the newest massive crossover in comics and co-publication. It’s presented by Dark Horse Comics with IDW and 2000 AD! When it comes to Aliens and Predator in comics, big crossovers aren’t a new thing. They have crossed over with popular names from Archie, Batman, Superman and even Tarzan. Judge Dredd himself has already had an encounter with the Aliens before. This will be the first time he’s caught in an Aliens versus Predator crossfire.
The issue begins with the Predator having the tables turned on him. He is the prey bleeding and fleeing for his life, while the hunters are a group of animal/human hybrids created by local mad scientist, Dr. Reinstot. It comes off as writer John Layman artist Chris Mooneyham taking on their own fun version of “The Island of Dr. Moreau.” The not-so-good Doctor gets his hands on the captured Predator, and all of his trophies, and extracts the DNA from them to begin his new experiments. Obviously, no predator trophy room is complete without human skulls and spines and of course, Xenomorph skulls.
Judge Dredd and his other Judges come into play on their motorcycles across the scorched deserts of the Cursed Earth near Mega-City One, searching for the ArchBishop Emoji. He is quickly established as a badass in this book. He and his crew bust up in the saloon and pummels anyone that gets in their way. Mooneyham’s style was a perfect choice for this book. He gives loads of detail and shows how big of a man that Judge Dredd can be. He doesn’t take crap from anybody. Judge Dredd’s faces can be funny how it doesn’t always match the Dialogue, but for a man that claims “I am the law.” We aren’t going to see him smile, or break character and show us a happy face. After the dust settles from apprehending the bandits. Judge Dredd and his Judges are led on the outskirts to none other than a jungle! The Predator’s favorite hunting ground.
