Brian Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s series has long been in development, but after multiple options, and even a filmed pilot for FX, it was finally announced that the series would be a Playstation Network exclusive, streaming on PlayStation consoles beginning in December 2014.
From Playstation: “Powers, an edgy dramatic series, follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities, referred to as “Powers.” Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals?
Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the brave people in charge of protecting humans like us and keeping the peace over commercialized, god-like men and women who glide through the sky imposing their power over the mortals who both worship and fear them.”
I’m happy that the series’ option has finally made some headway, as I’ve been looking forward to an on-screen version of my favorite Bendis-written series.
And now we have our first trailer, and it doesn’t look half bad, though it doesn’t feel like Powers to me. The acting looks top notch, and the directing and cinematography are both more than competent. I still think that being a Playstation exclusive is going to work against it, but we’ll have to wait and see in a few more months. Tell us what you think of the trailer in the comments.
